DESE is seeking a Database Specialist / Software Developer to join our software development team. The successful candidate will lead database design and optimization efforts while also contributing to web application development. This position is ideal for a developer who enjoys working in a collaborative, small-team environment where contributions directly support the mission.

Responsibilities

• Lead SQL Server and Postgres design, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.

• Support migration and integration of data between SQL Server and Postgres systems.

• Contribute to .NET MVC web applications (C#, Telerik/Kendo, front-end integrations).

• Collaborate with developers in a small team environment to design, build, and maintain applications.

• Develop and promote best practices for schema design, data access, and performance across applications.

Required Qualifications

• 7–10 years of professional software/database development experience.

• Strong expertise in SQL Server schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning.

• Solid experience with Postgres, including performance tuning and cross-platform considerations.

• Working knowledge of C# / .NET MVC web development.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on complex technical challenges.

• Ability to thrive in a small team environment wearing multiple hats.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with JavaScript.

• Familiarity with DoD contracting environments.

• Background in both application and database architecture.
