Registered Nurse (RN) - Emergency Department /Trauma Center - University Hospital

Responsibilities Various Shifts Available Practice family-centered nursing according to policies and the Nurse Practice Act. Serve as Charge Nurse when assigned. Supervise, plan, evaluate, and coordinate patient care provided by licensed and non-licensed staff. Demonstrate CPR according to American Heart Association standards. Abide by and enforce all compliance requirements and policies ethically, consistent with the organization’s values. Adhere to hospital policies including confidentiality. Serve as a preceptor for new employees and nursing students. Utilize the nursing process to assess patients, plan individual care, identify expected outcomes, and implement and evaluate nursing interventions for patients and families. Perform therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, administer medications including controlled substances and blood products, respond to emergency situations, perform basic life support, start IVs, and assist with activities of daily living. When performing skilled procedures, state the purpose, rationale, precautions, and observations. Use proper body mechanics when moving or transferring patients and equipment. Provide patient education by planning, coordinating, and delegating educational needs. Access the Clinical Information System using a computer or terminal. Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, families, and the healthcare team in person and via telephone. Respond to overhead pages, complete ADP within the unit time frame, and document in flow charts, discharge forms, MAR, and patient care records. Transcribe physician orders and complete mandatory requirements. Utilize cost-effective practices, adhere to Infection Control and Safety Standards, and provide competent care to diverse patient populations. Care for all types of CVLs including PICC/Midlines. Maintain current knowledge of policies, procedures, equipment, and supplies. Ensure proper documentation and certification compliance (PALS, ACLS, TNCC). Administer and monitor conscious sedation. Organize activities to meet patient and staff needs. Communicate with management about unit status, patient issues, and quality management. Assist with shift duties, verify emergency equipment, and complete narcotic and stock drug counts. Participate in committees and Performance Improvement activities. Maintain electronic and paper medical records. Demonstrate regular attendance and flexibility to work scheduled hours and overtime as required. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and a current Alabama RN license or a Multi-State RN License in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for Alabama.
