Postdoc Researcher, Science, Visiting
Job Description
Job Description
USRA and the Science and Technology Institute are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Scientist for a one-year assignment. This candidate will support scientific investigations that inform the design and optimize the science return of the Geospace Dynamics Constellation (GDC). The candidate will conduct innovative research focused on mid- and low-latitude responses of the ionosphere-thermosphere system to magnetospheric energy input and the interplay between ionospheric instabilities and solar-driven wind dynamo systems.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Conduct original scientific research supporting the objectives of the Geospace Dynamics Constellation mission.
- Investigate the effects of geomagnetic disturbances on low- and mid-latitude electrodynamics and coupled ion-neutral dynamics.
- Analyze and interpret ground-based and satellite observations of ionospheric electrodynamics and ion-neutral coupling.
- Assist in the design, execution, and interpretation of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) using synthetic datasets.
- Assess the capability of the Geospace Dynamics Constellation, potentially in conjunction with the DYNAMIC mission, to advance understanding of processes that enhance or suppress equatorial plasma bubble and spread-F development.
- Collaborate with scientists and mission teams on research activities and scientific assessments.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Present scientific results at conferences, workshops, and professional meetings.
Education: Ph.D. in Space Physics, Atmospheric Science, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related scientific discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience conducting novel scientific research.
- Demonstrated record of communicating scientific results through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
- Demonstrated publication record in low- and mid-latitude ionospheric electrodynamics.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of ground-based and satellite observations of ionospheric electrodynamics and ion-neutral coupling at low and mid latitudes.
- Knowledge of ionospheric and thermospheric dynamics and magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling processes.
- Experience working with scientific datasets, data analysis tools, and modeling or simulation techniques.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively through written publications and oral presentations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc., and extensive online usage. This is largely a sedentary role.
Travel: Occasional travel to scientific conferences, workshops, and professional meetings may be required.

Applicants should apply to the posting at Home | USRA Careers and include a letter of interest, resume, or curriculum vitae. Additional information on USRA can be found at Home | USRA
