Position Summary:

To provide a safe and effective aquatic program by directly supervising campers and participants at the waterfront, understanding and responding to protocols and emergency procedures, and providing an exceptional camp experience to all. When not actively lifeguarding, this position may also serve in the role of camp counselor, supervising campers and leading other program activities. This is a 6-week residential position at Camp Kateri (Hawthorne, FL) that will run May 31, 2026 – July 3, 2026 , and includes room and meals for the duration of the summer sessions. There is an option to extend to July 17, 2026, at Camp Kugelman (Lillian, AL).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Lifeguard:

  • Provides emergency lifesaving assistance to swimmers; performs lifesaving C.P.R. and first aid in accordance with certified practices and procedures; contacts emergency medical assistance when needed; stays with victims until emergency medical assistance takes over care of victim.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards and GSUSA guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining lakefront programs.
  • Ensures the camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures in boating by assisting in the implementations of staff training for boating, train other staff in their boating responsibilities and ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures for boating.
  • Provides constant surveillance of waterfront activities to help prevent and manage injuries.
  • Directs and supervises the behavior of all swimmers to ensure compliance with lakefront safety rules.
  • Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff.
  • Monitors changes in weather and responds appropriately and in cooperation with established camp guidelines for waterfront evacuation; guides campers in a calm and orderly manner.
  • Daily inspection and cleaning of boats and life jackets.
  • Makes sure that all boating equipment is secured and locked before personnel leave the lake area.
  • Monitors waterfront activities to include swimming, boating, canoeing, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Camp Counselor:

  • Work with Unit Leader and/or administrative staff to formulate and implement activities and experiences in the unit through girl planning, the session theme, and the Girl Scout program emphasis.
  • Know the girls in the unit and help them to respect the rights of others and understand the differences and similarities of other campers.
  • Supervise campers and ensure their physical and emotional health and safety at all times.
  • Assist in maintaining unit sanitation, housekeeping, and care of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with the storing and packing of equipment for safety during and at the end of the season.
  • Keep Unit Leader informed of day-to-day unit successes and concerns, as well as camper health and other unit issues.
  • Maintain a good rapport with parents and the community.
  • Keep required records and reports as requested by Unit Leader and/or administrative staff.
  • Assist with check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Assist with the opening and closing of the entire camp.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Current Lifeguard, waterfront lifeguard, and CPR professional rescuer certifications from the American Red Cross or comparable certificate from the YMCA or other certifying organization.
  • Be a currently registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA or willing to become a member.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age. (15 yrs. – 17 yrs. Will be applying for a Junior Lifeguard)
  • Be willing to live in a staff cabin near campers.
  • Have training and/or experience working with children in an outdoor setting.
  • Have good time management, organization and communication skills.
  • Hold current certification in standard First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to clear a Florida Department of Law Enforcement Level 2 fingerprint / background screening and drug screening.
  • Believe in the mission of the Girl Scout movement.
  • Good character, integrity, adaptability, patience, sense of humor, and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision and relate to one’s peer group.
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout philosophy, standards, program, and systems.
  • Experience and demonstrated sensitivity in working with people from various ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds.
  • Excellent communications skills; excellent facilitation, conflict resolution, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and polite in stressful situations.
  • Must be driven, self-motivated, and a strong leader to inspire staff and girls.
  • Strong interest in working with youth and teens.

  • Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Outdoor exposure includes elements of nature to include shrubbery, vegetation (poison ivy), hills, rocky walk areas, etc. as well as bugs, wild animals and reptiles.
  • Sufficient visual acuity to make appropriate judgments regarding Girl Scout materials.
  • Physical ability to frequently stop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, lift, and move objects up to 50 pounds at shoulder height, and occasionally lift in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Demonstrated normal depth perception.
  • See and read printed materials, with or without visual aids; distinguish colors; read and understand rules and policies, labels and instructions.
  • Verbal communication including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.
  • Other demands, as determined by the employer.
