Position Overview
Thompson Engineering is seeking a motivated Engineering Associate I or II to join our team in Mobile. This is an entry-level engineering role designed for recent graduates or early-career professionals with 0–5 years of experience .
The Engineering Associate will support engineers and project managers by performing technical assignments that develop professional knowledge and engineering skills. The position involves applying standard engineering techniques and procedures while working on a variety of design, construction, municipal, and infrastructure projects .
This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in engineering planning, design, field inspections, and project coordination while working alongside experienced professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Development
- Learn and apply sound engineering practices and professional standards to daily work assignments.
- Utilize computers, engineering software, handbooks, and emerging technologies to support engineering tasks.
- Perform basic engineering calculations , develop reports, and assist with coordination between multiple technical disciplines.
- Conduct work in an organized, accurate, and productive manner while maintaining attention to detail.
Project Support
- Assist with preliminary design efforts, project planning, and engineering analyses related to design and construction projects.
- Support the preparation of technical specifications, cost estimates, material estimates, engineering reports, and studies .
- Compile project data and present findings clearly to team members and project stakeholders.
Field Work & Site Assessments
- Conduct site visits to evaluate existing conditions, collect field data, and support project development.
- Assist senior engineers with field observations, documentation, and reporting.
Communication & Coordination
- Coordinate and communicate with internal team members, clients, and external stakeholders through phone calls and email.
- Work collaboratively with engineers, project managers, and other disciplines to support project execution.
Professional Development
- Recognize knowledge limitations and seek guidance when necessary to ensure quality work.
- Follow company safety procedures and quality standards on all projects.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly express technical ideas.
- Basic understanding of engineering principles and willingness to learn through hands-on project work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship or early career experience in engineering, construction project management or municipal infrastructure projects .
- Familiarity with engineering design tools, spreadsheets, PDF editing tools, and project documentation processes.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work flexible schedules , including overtime and occasional overnight travel as required by project needs.
- Ability to operate a computer and sit for extended periods of time .
- Ability to work outdoors and in field environments , including walking on uneven or unstable surfaces such as concrete, grass, dirt, or gravel.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.
