R&D Maintenance Services, Inc. provides operations and maintenance services on U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects throughout the southeast - since 1980. We are the Operations and Maintenance Contractor for the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway providing maintenance and repair services on several hundred miles of waterway, numerous facilities/recreations areas, and locks/dams/spillways on the system. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Performs a full range of welding/fabrication work (shop and field) in a maintenance environment including repair, replacement, and fabrication for structural steel, mobile and fixed equipment, lock and dam infrastructure (gates, floating bits, embedded steel, railings, equipment mounts) etc. Requires inspecting, diagnosing, planning, and executing of repair and maintenance requirements requiring cutting, welding, brazing, etc.; working from schematics, drawings, layouts, or other specifications; and fabrication of items from instructions or as-built measurements.


ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS:

  • Plan, design, organize, and lay out fabrication and repair jobs (shop and field) from plans, instructions, or measurements. .
  • Structural steel repair in flat, vertical, and overhead positions working at height or confined spaces.
  • Cut materials using air arcs, burning rods, and acetylene/oxygen cutting torches to fit fabrication and job requirements.
  • Perform welding repair and maintenance to stationary lock and dam equipment, machinery, and large hydraulic steel structures (lock gates).
  • Perform metal repair in a pin bore using a portable bore welding system.
  • Layout and fabrication of components, jigs, fixtures, floating mooring bits, etc. from plans, instructions, or measurement of existing items.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques used in the welding trade, including thorough knowledge of welding material, welding properties, and various types of metals.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to plan and schedule multiple tasks and effectively prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; analyze and solve problems; make decisions; exercise good judgment; perform well under pressure; adapt well to change.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must have knowledge of and mathematical ability to perform required measurements, calculations.
  • Ability to demonstrate overall safe work behavior; including the utilization of proper safety equipment and adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Ability to operate an aerial lift, forklift, overhead crane, and/or bucket lift.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or formal training in welding; Prefer technical school degree or certificate in welding/welding technology.
  • Must have five (5) years of experience welding and fabricating in a maintenance environment (not production welding).
  • Must be able to read and interpret drawings and schematics.
  • Must be able operate saws, torch, grinders, ironworker, welder, and basic power and hand tools.
  • Must be able to perform MIG, TIG, stick, and brazing.
  • Must be able to cut materials using air arcs, burning rods, and acetylene/oxygen cutting torches to fit fabrication and job requirements.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have knowledge of precision measurement and layout and mathematical ability to perform required calculations.
  • Required to successfully complete background check, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Some field travel and occasional overtime. Occasional overnight stays.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent walking and standing.
  • Frequently lifts/carries up to 20 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; occasional pulling up to 20 pounds.
  • Frequently climbing ladders and working at heights;
  • Frequent use of welding machines, torches, cutting equipment, and power and hand tools.
  • Frequent balancing, kneeling, reaching (full range) bending, handling, feeling, climbing, smelling and twisting; occasional crawling and reaching; working in cramped and confined spaces.
