Patient Advocate - Pharmacy Technician - Bruno Cancer Center (Part-Time)

Welcome to Alabama Rx, a medically integrated specialty pharmacy with Alabama Oncology. As one of the largest community oncology practices in the state, Alabama Oncology has 22 oncologists and 6 advanced level practitioners in 8 clinic locations. Alabama RX was established in 2015 to bring specialty pharmacy services to the practice and to help streamline pharmacy benefits for our patients.

As a patient advocate at Alabama Rx, you will work hand in hand with pharmacy team members, referring physicians, nursing staff, and care coordinators to create a smooth treatment process for our patients. Essential Job duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists with the preparation of medication orders under direct supervision.
  • Checks all order entries for completeness of information. Verifies patient information, insurance, and physician authorization.
  • Receiving, pricing, and filling of written and electronic prescriptions.
  • Assists with insurance claims processing.
  • Assists with the prior authorization process (obtaining medical records for approvals, assisting in PA denials, MD notes, clinical trials, etc.)
  • Assists with foundation support and other benefits investigations needed to care for patients.
  • Obtains copay assistance through copay programs and foundation support, works closely with all foundation organizations, enroll patients in PAP programs.
  • Assists with inventory control ensuring availability of medications. Orders, receives, and shelves medications and supplies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information related to patients and staff.
  • Interacting with patients to help them understand insurance, financial responsibility, and the complex nature of pharmacy benefits. Strong interpersonal skills are essential. Resolve issues when they arise.
  • Compassion and great patient care are essential for this role.
  • Resolves delivery issues with common carriers and notifies patients.
  • Maintains compliance with all rules and regulations pertaining to the practice of pharmacy.

Minimum job qualifications, experience, education, and/or training

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Current Pharmacy Technician License
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or other nationally recognized and accredited certification program requiring examination.
  • 2 years' experience as a pharmacy technician preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy Law and medical terminology
  • Highly detailed/organizational skills required
  • Due to the complex nature of the industry, experience in Oncology may be considered above other qualifications.
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard. (Word, Excel, OneNote, Teams)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Negotiation skills to assist the patient in navigation of the health care system.
  • Ability to maintain highly confidential and sensitive information. (Annual HIPPA training)
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Work independently and within a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
