Position Summary:

The Camp Chef will serve to develop and facilitate the nutrition of the Girl Scouts while they are attending Camp Kateri. This position will be responsible for managing the kitchen aides along with creating menus daily for campers. This position is unique in that the applicant will be responsible for the food service for the camp community. This is an 8-week residential position that will run May 24, 2026 – July 17, 2026 , and includes room and meals for the duration of the summer sessions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow planned nutritionist-approved menus within budget, post daily menus.
  • Ensure that special dietary restrictions of campers and staff are met; ensure food allergies are reviewed weekly with the Health Supervisor.
  • Order food using supplier list approved by Camp Director; check food deliveries against food orders.
  • Supervise and direct the work of Cooks and Kitchen Aides; evaluate staff at mid-season and end-of-season.
  • See that dining rooms, kitchen, and food storage areas meet Girl Scout standards, ACA standards, and state and local health laws in such areas as dishwashing, care of leftover food, insect control, and fire safety.
  • Coordinate meal planning with special activities such as camp banquets.
  • Review and coordinate completion of the weekly unit pack out requests for nutritional standards and sufficient quantities.
  • Maintain well-equipped first aid, seeking additional supplies from the Health Supervisor as needed. Report all injuries and accidents promptly.
  • Orient staff to kitchen procedures during pre-camp.
  • Maintain inventories; keep records (menus, meals served, food bought, milk report, and cost-per-camper meals); make necessary reports.
  • Maintain open communication with Camp Director during camp season to discuss meals, food orders, reports, etc.
  • Coordinate the hoppers and the kitchen staff during serving of meals.
  • Assure all food bills, receipt, and other records of kitchen operations are given to the Business Manager for accurate record keeping.
  • Assist in the opening and closing of camp as directed.
  • Take precautions to ensure personal health.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings on time and in uniform.
  • Be a role model for campers in words, deeds, and actions.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with campers, parents, and staff.
  • Provide a safe and fun atmosphere for campers to explore, learn, and create while developing personally.
  • Responsible, thorough, and timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Complete end of the season report and update Food Service Manager Binder throughout the summer.
  • These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

Required Skills /Abilities:

  • Acceptance of and adherence to the principles of Girl Scouting as embodied in the Promise and Law, and as demonstrated by membership in the Girl Scout movement
  • Interest, knowledge, and/or skill in the Girl Scout program in the camp setting.
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in camp setting.
  • Integrity, good character, good judgment, calmness.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, problem solving skills, and self-control.
  • Ability to place needs of girls and camp above personal needs acceptance of people from diverse backgrounds and ability to live and work with girls and adults of different backgrounds and abilities in a semi-primitive environment.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications preferred.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Training and experience in cooking for large groups.
  • Knowledge of standards of food preparation, serving and kitchen procedures.
  • Hold state Food Handlers Manager certificate, ServSafe or equivalent certification.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Abilities to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations, and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly to a camp emergency.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout camp and carry 50 pounds.
  • Experience in conflict resolution. Ability to resolve conflict quickly to ensure the health and safety needs of campers are maintained.
