Children’s Aid Society of Alabama (CAS) is an organization with a mission of changing lives, building families, and strengthening communities. CAS provides adoption support services; family intervention services aimed at preserving and reunifying families; support for youth living in foster care; housing and wraparound services for pregnant and parenting homeless youth and young adults; parenting education; and a robust child anti‑trafficking program. For more than a century, CAS has worked to ensure that Alabama’s children grow up in safe, stable, and nurturing homes. Our programs serve children and families across all 67 counties and emphasize equity, compassion, and trauma‑informed practice.
Position Summary
The CEO leads the management and administration of services, personnel, operations, strategic planning, program development, risk management, quality improvement, fund development, financial management, advocacy, and marketing.
Management and Administration
- Oversees the supervision and evaluation of agency services to ensure maximum utilization of best practices, resources, management of risks, achievement of desired outcomes, and performance quality improvement.
- Ensure that agency functions support the well‑being of both clients and employees.
- Ensure full agency compliance with all state and federal laws, licensing, certification, and accreditation standards applicable to IRS Section 501(c)(3) and child welfare organizations.
- Oversees the recruitment, selection, employment, training, evaluation, compensation, and termination of employees and contractors.
- Works with the Board of Directors to develop and revise CAS policies.
- Implements personnel practices that meet all applicable employment laws and licensure regulations.
- Informs the Board of Directors of risks and trends that affect the reputation and functioning of CAS.
- Directs the annual budget process and periodic budget revisions that are necessary to address changing revenue and expenditures.
- Oversees the finance department to guarantee that generally accepted accounting practices and funding requirements are met, and reporting is accurate and timely.
- Maintains funding mechanisms to support and enhance existing services when the services are cost‑effective and achieve desired outcomes.
- Eliminates services that drain agency resources and fail to meet outcomes.
Capacity Building
- Engages in fundraising and oversees the preparation of new and renewed grants and contracts.
- Seeks diversification of funding through governmental (state and federal) grants and contracts, United Way, corporate and foundation grants, individual donors, fundraising campaigns, special events, vendor arrangements, and program service fees.
- Oversees the development of new programs and services that are based on client and community needs.
- Oversees the strategic planning process.
- Oversees the Performance Quality Improvement process and the design and redesign of agency services based on PQI results.
- Collaborates formally and informally with other public and private agencies, businesses, and institutions through a variety of contractual or consortia agreements.
Partnership with the CAS and Children’s Aid Foundation Board of Directors
- Keeps the Board of Directors apprised of internal and external issues and trends that affect personnel, services, general operations, advocacy, and strategic direction.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with the CAS and CAF Boards.
- Listens and promptly responds to each Board’s concerns, questions, and requests.
- Works closely with Directors to support the implementation of CAS and CAF Board functions.
Advocacy
- Works with individuals and groups on a local, state, regional, and national level to influence public policy affecting the well‑being of young people and to enlist broad public support for efforts, both public and private, that provide assistance to children, youth, and families in need.
- Oversees the execution of agency advocacy efforts.
Marketing/Public Relations
- Increases public awareness and visibility of agency services and client needs.
- Oversees the development and execution of the CAS Marketing Plan.
Minimum Education
Master’s degree in social work from an accredited graduate program or a master’s degree or Ph.D. in a related human service or business‑related field from an accredited graduate program.
Minimum Work Experience
Ten years in non‑profit administration, preferably child and family services, with at least five of those years managing multiple social service programs.
Required Licenses/Certifications
AL licensure or eligibility related to professional degree preferred; Valid Alabama driver’s license and auto insurance minimum liability 100/300.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Ability to demonstrate cultural and socioeconomic proficiency and trauma‑responsive care.

The job will be located at the CAS headquarters in Birmingham, AL.
