Primary Purpose of the Position

As a Structural Steel Welding Specialist, you will be at the forefront of heavy fabrication, performing critical submerged arc and 3G flux core steel plate welding. This dynamic role involves contributing to essential infrastructure projects, including moveable bridges, hydropower facilities, locks and dams, and diverse industrial applications within a fast-paced job shop environment. This is an opportunity to apply your expertise to impactful and varied projects.

Essential Functions / Duties

  • Adhere rigorously to applicable welding procedures, including AWS and AISC standards, ensuring the highest quality and compliance.
  • Execute precision welds in diverse environments, including ground level, elevated, and subterranean positions, mastering all required welding orientations.
  • Skillfully chip, peen, and grind materials to meticulously prepare surfaces for welding or achieve desired finishes.
  • Perform expert welding on a variety of structural materials, such as plates, sheets, girders, and tanks, often working with uncommon structural or machine metals under stringent heat application and workmanship tolerances.
  • Utilize heat or flame techniques to precisely straighten materials, ensuring dimensional accuracy.
  • Execute gouging and scarfing operations with proficiency as required for project specifications.
  • Successfully complete and pass welding tests in strict accordance with AWS D1.5 standards, demonstrating certified expertise.
  • Interpret and execute tasks based on instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders, ensuring accurate project execution.
  • Master the reading and interpretation of complex blueprints to effectively plan and execute fitting operations.
  • Lead and assist in the precise handling and spreading of materials, expertly assembling components according to detailed drawings, and accurately placing bolts, drift pins, and other fastening devices.
  • Strategically lay out work lines or set up jigs for optimal material positioning, meticulously checking, squaring, and scribing all detail connections.
  • Ensure all work consistently conforms to engineering drawings and specified notes, upholding quality standards.
  • Perform thorough material cleanup through grinding or chipping, preparing surfaces for subsequent processes.
  • Execute burning and tack welding for assembly purposes, and proficiently burn, cope, bevel, and straighten materials, including minor layout tasks.
  • Apply spot paints for clear identification marks, ensuring proper material tracking.
  • Efficiently move materials to and from the work area, relocate welding equipment as needed, and precisely position component parts on tables, fixtures, or jibs, including tacking when required.
  • Maintain a consistently clean and organized work area, promoting efficiency and safety.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols for self and others, promptly report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate authority, and perform additional duties as assigned by supervision.

You will report directly to the Plant Manager, gaining valuable leadership exposure and contributing to strategic operational goals.

This pivotal position is based at our state-of-the-art Plant 2 facility in vibrant Birmingham, Alabama, offering a stimulating work environment and growth potential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possess a minimum of 5 years of proven expertise in structural steel or fabrication welding, demonstrating a strong foundation in the field.
  • Demonstrate the capability to consistently weld to AWS D1.5 quality and specifications, ensuring superior craftsmanship.
  • Exhibit the ability to successfully pass rigorous fracture critical inspections, upholding the highest safety and quality standards.
  • Possess exceptional communication and customer service skills, fostering effective collaboration and client satisfaction.
  • Proficiently read and interpret complex shop fabrication drawings, enabling precise layout, fit-up, and material formation according to blueprints.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of welding symbols, ensuring accurate execution of welding procedures.
  • Exhibit high motivation and the ability to work autonomously, taking initiative and delivering results independently.
  • Be physically capable of performing all essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, ensuring full participation in all tasks.

Preferred Requirements

  • Possess valuable prior experience in bridge work, contributing to complex and critical infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in overhead crane operation, enhancing efficiency and safety in material handling.

Working Conditions

The work environment is dynamic and may involve occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, elevated or challenging locations, airborne elements, varying outdoor weather conditions, temperature extremes, moisture, specific chemicals, and potential for electrical shock or vibration. The ambient noise level typically remains moderate.

Physical Requirements

This role demands an active physical presence, regularly requiring the ability to stand, walk, and sit, along with adept use of hands for handling and feeling, reaching with arms, and effective communication through talking and hearing. Occasional requirements include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, and the ability to smell. The position may also involve occasionally lifting and moving up to 50 pounds. Essential visual acuity includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
