Director of Purchasing
Position Overview
The Director of Purchasing will lead and manage all procurement activities to ensure timely, cost-effective acquisition of materials, components, and services. This role oversees sourcing strategy, supplier relationships, OEM partnerships, and purchasing processes to support production, inventory management, and organizational goals. The Director will drive continuous process improvements, negotiate favorable terms, and collaborate cross-functionally to align purchasing decisions with business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute strategic sourcing and procurement plans to meet company objectives for cost, quality, and delivery.
- Lead, mentor, and manage the purchasing team to ensure high performance, training, and clear accountability.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with OEMs, suppliers, and distributors to secure reliable supply and favorable terms.
- Negotiate contracts, pricing, and long-term agreements, including volume discounts, lead times, and service levels.
- Oversee the request-for-quote (RFQ) and quoting process, evaluate supplier proposals, and select suppliers based on total cost and risk analysis.
- Perform cost analysis, spend analysis, and supplier performance metrics to identify savings opportunities and drive cost reduction.
- Implement and optimize purchasing policies, procedures, and systems (including Epicor or other ERP tools) to improve efficiency and data accuracy.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, quality, and finance teams to align sourcing decisions with product requirements and inventory strategies.
- Manage risk mitigation activities such as dual-sourcing, contingency planning, and supplier audits to ensure continuity of supply.
- Report on purchasing KPIs, budgets, forecasts, and supplier performance to senior leadership and recommend strategic initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 810 years of progressive purchasing/procurement experience with at least 35 years in a leadership or director-level role.
- Demonstrated experience with Epicor or similar ERP systems and strong proficiency in procurement modules and data analysis.
- Proven track record working with OEMs and managing supplier relationships in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong expertise in strategic sourcing, negotiation, quoting processes, and cost analysis with measurable savings delivered.
- Experience leading process improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma, or equivalent) to streamline purchasing operations.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- Advanced analytical skills and proficiency with Excel and procurement analytics tools; experience with sourcing platforms and contract management.
- Ability to travel to suppliers and OEM sites as needed and manage supplier audits and performance reviews.
