Metallurgical Testing Technician - Tubular Products Quality
Shape quality at U. S. Steel’s Fairfield Tubular Operations
Step onto the lab floor where safety comes first and precision drives every decision. As a Metallurgical Testing Technician, you’ll help uphold the highest standards for our seamless tubular production by preparing steel samples and performing critical mechanical tests in a fast-paced, industrial setting.
A day in the role
You arrive ready for a rotating 8-hour shift—sometimes on weekends or holidays—and gear up with personal protective equipment: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and boots with metatarsal protection. Safety is a core value here. You’ll move between plasma cutters, band saws, and belt grinders to prepare samples, then perform tensile, hardness, collapse, and flatness testing to verify that specifications are met. You’ll work around hot, heavy, or sharp materials in environments that can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy—staying focused, punctual, and self-directed throughout.
What you’ll do
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines without exception.
- Prepare steel samples using tools such as plasma cutters, band saws, and belt grinders.
- Run mechanical tests, including tensile, hardness, collapse, and flatness, to confirm required specifications.
- Operate effectively in a dynamic industrial setting with hot, heavy, or sharp materials.
What you bring
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Successful completion of high school chemistry is preferred.
- Ability to work rotating 8-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Willingness to work overtime as needed.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate a forklift, or willingness to obtain and maintain forklift certification.
Preferred experience
- Background in metallurgical testing within a heavy industrial environment.
Join a team that prizes reliability, safety, and quality—and help ensure every tube meets the mark.
