Mechanical Engineer
Specialist, Mechanical Engineer (Tool Design)
L3Harris is seeking a Specialist, Tool Design Engineer to join our team at our growing AMF facility in Huntsville, AL. Tool engineers are responsible to define manual and semi-automated tooling such as jigs, fixtures, molds, mandrels, and lifting devices are all required in the fabrication and assembly of solid fuel rocket motors. The role of a Tool Engineer is a mixture of design, structural analysis, project management, and hands-on manufacturing. In this role, the selected individual will be responsible for:
- Working with cross-functional teams to define tool requirements.
- Designing using PTC Creo and Windchill in accordance with principles of Design for Manufacturability.
- Conducting design reviews with cross-functional teams to obtain approval of tool designs.
- Overseeing procurement/fabrication of tooling.
- Working with manufacturing engineers to perform functional evaluations and acceptance of the tooling.
- Performing liaison support for tool maintenance by identification of tool problems, design of repairs, and implementation of modifications.
- Using finite element analysis (FEA) methods and tools to perform structural analysis of tools in order to predict internal stresses and resolve structural instabilities.
- Applying GD&T and complex system tolerance analysis.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to obtain a US security clearance.
- Travel: 5%.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience; or a Graduate Degree, and a minimum of 2 years prior mechanical engineering design experience; or in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 8 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience.
- 2 years of prior experience specifically in design of tooling, ground support equipment, or special test equipment.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Experience with Siemens NX is preferred.
- Experience with ANSYS is preferred.
- Fabrication experience is preferred.
- Composite Wind tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred.
- Compression Mold tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred.
- Experience working in the defense industry is desired.
- Active US Secret Clearance is desired.
