High School Humanities Teacher
Founded in 2017 in Birmingham, Alabama, Build UP is a workforce development high school model with three campuses and six programs in Birmingham and Selma, Alabama and Brownsville, Texas. Build UP Community School
Since 2018, Build UP Community School (BUCS) has served as the flagship campus of Build UP—America’s first early-college, career-connected high school model that integrates education, workforce development, and homeownership to break intergenerational cycles of poverty. Located in Birmingham, Alabama, BUCS serves students and youth in grades 9 through early postsecondary, supporting them on a six-year pathway that leads to a high school diploma, college credit and/or industry-recognized credentials, and eventual ownership of an affordable home.

Position Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and community-connected Humanities Teacher to join our private high school in an urban setting. The ideal candidate will be able to integrate project-based learning and community-integrated education into their teaching approach. The teacher will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging and challenging lessons that help students develop the critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills necessary for success in the modern workforce.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction and Planning:
Curriculum Plan: Devise a routine for planning tailoring the curriculum to meet the needs of the students with timely lesson plans that meet school expectations turned into leadership.
Lesson Planning/Structure: The lessons contain a do now, guided practice, and exit ticket that is at an application level of rigor. Teacher adjusts instruction to ensure student engagement, learning, and work completion.
Academic Rigor: Provide opportunities for engagement with higher order thinking skills at least an application/analysis level as defined by blooms taxonomy.
Student Engagement: Use of developmentally-appropriate instructional strategies, resources, and technology to support access to the curriculum
Assessment and Response to Assessment Results: Check for understanding formally and informally to evaluate and respond to student learning. Demonstrate an ability to respond effectively to assessment results by developing appropriate accommodations and remediation, scaffolds, and support students with various learning needs (i.e. IEP, ELL etc) based on the data.
Classroom Management:
Classroom Procedures: Establish clear classroom routines, procedures, and norms, including a clear What To Do, Daily Learning Objectives, Agenda and Exit Ticket.
Classroom Expectations: Establish and maintain clear and explicit directions for learning and behavior.
Active Monitoring: Survey the academic engagement of the classroom
Least Invasive: Ability to perceive when a student, class, or group is unfocused or unruly; refocus them using least invasive procedures first; and do it again effectively.
On-Task Behavior: Extent to which students are engaged in content and completing tasks. Teacher holds out for 100% response participation.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in education, humanities, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
Teaching certification or license (or eligibility for certification).
Demonstrated success in designing and implementing lessons towards strong academic outcomes.
Solid communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Experience working in an urban or diverse educational setting.
Knowledge of current educational trends and best practices in secondary education and project-based learning.
Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
