Lab Courier - PRN
The Lab Courier is a PRN position working Mon-Fri, afternoons, 3pm to 5pm.This position is responsible for the safe, timely, and accurate transportation of laboratory specimens, reports, supplies, and related materials between Troy Regional, physician offices, clinics, outreach locations, and other designated facilities. This position plays an important role in supporting laboratory operations and patient care by ensuring specimen integrity, maintaining confidentiality, and providing excellent customer service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Picks up and delivers laboratory specimens, medical supplies, reports, and related materials according to established schedules and procedures.
- Ensures proper handling, labeling, transport, and storage conditions of laboratory specimens during transport.
- Maintains specimen integrity and follows all laboratory safety, infection control, and chain-of-custody procedures.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with laboratory staff, physician offices, clinic personnel, and hospital departments.
- Operates vehicle safely and in compliance with all traffic laws and organizational policies.
- Assists with laboratory and medical supplies as assigned
- Adheres to HIPAA confidentiality requirements and always protects patient information.
- Follows OSHA safety standards, bloodborne pathogen guidelines, and infection prevention protocols.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
- Prior courier, delivery, healthcare, or laboratory experience preferred but not required.
Licensure/Certification
- Valid Alabama driver’s license required.
- Acceptable driving record required in accordance with hospital insurance guidelines.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Basic understanding of specimen handling and infection control principles preferred.
- Ability to communicate professionally with staff, providers, and patients.
- Knowledge of local roads and surrounding service areas preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift throughout the workday.
- Ability to frequently enter and exit vehicles during deliveries.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to work in varied weather and driving conditions
Work Environment
- Work is performed both inside healthcare facilities and outdoors while operating a vehicle in varying weather and traffic conditions. Exposure to biological specimens and healthcare environments may occur.
