Responsibilities:

POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Payroll Manager will oversee and supervise the organization’s payroll functions, ensuring pay is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations. Reporting to EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer, this role will sit in our Birmingham office.

Special focus to be placed on:

  • Implement, maintain, and review payroll processing systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll updates, including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Facilitate audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Act as a project manager to implement payroll processing software.
  • Identify and recommend updates to payroll processing software, systems, and procedures.
  • Support SOX compliance reporting and ensure data integrity across payroll systems and processes.
  • Coordinate with Finance and HR teams to ensure payroll aligns with budgeting, forecasting, and headcount planning.
  • Monitor and analyze payroll metrics (e.g., error rates, processing time) to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure data integrity and security of payroll information, especially in compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Develop and deliver payroll training for HR staff and managers to ensure understanding of payroll policies and systems.
  • Manage vendor relationships with external payroll providers or consultants, including contract negotiation and performance evaluation.
  • Support M&A or restructuring activities by managing payroll transitions, integrations, and compliance during organizational changes.
  • Coordinate with Finance and HR teams to ensure payroll aligns with budgeting, forecasting, and headcount planning.
  • Monitor and analyze payroll metrics (e.g., error rates, processing time) to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure data integrity and security of payroll information, especially in compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Develop and deliver payroll training for HR staff and managers to ensure understanding of payroll policies and systems.
  • Manage vendor relationships with external payroll providers or consultants, including contract negotiation and performance evaluation.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex payroll issues or employee concerns, ensuring timely resolution and communication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge of the payroll function includes preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient with payroll software.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods working at a desk in front of a computer.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
