Job Title: Civil Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on providing civil sitework engineering design services, including grading plans, hydrology and stormwater management systems, roadway design, and erosion control planning and design. You will prepare complete construction drawing packages, calculations, and sketches using AutoCAD Civil 3D and established CAD templates, standards, and go-bys. The position also includes providing construction support for the designs and drawings you develop and occasional travel for site visits to gain familiarity with project locations and document existing conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop civil sitework designs, including grading plans, hydrology and stormwater management systems, roadway layouts, and erosion control plans.
  • Prepare comprehensive construction drawing packages, calculations, and sketches in accordance with internal CAD templates, drafting standards, and go-bys.
  • Use AutoCAD Civil 3D to produce accurate and constructible civil design plans and related documentation.
  • Support hydrology and stormwater management system design, including drainage and site development considerations.
  • Plan and design erosion control measures to support regulatory compliance and construction feasibility.
  • Provide construction support for issued designs and drawings, including responding to questions and clarifications from construction teams.
  • Conduct limited site visits to gain familiarity with project sites and collect information needed to support engineering designs and drawing packages.
  • Document site conditions during visits, including photo documentation and notes, to inform design decisions.
  • Provide technical support and information to construction site teams as needed during construction.
  • Interface with contractors, internal departments, vendors, and other project stakeholders to coordinate design requirements and resolve issues.
  • Collaborate effectively with project team members while also working independently when required.
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and organization.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally in both written and oral formats to convey design intent and project updates.
  • Maintain organized project files, calculations, and design documentation in alignment with internal standards.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in site development design, including grading plan design, hydrology and stormwater management systems design, roadway design, and erosion control planning and design.
  • Proficient experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil sitework design and construction plan package development.
  • Ability to prepare complete construction drawing packages, including plans, details, and supporting calculations.
  • Ability to provide technical support and information to construction site teams during construction.
  • Capability to perform limited site visits for site familiarity and design support.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment and handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Self-starter with a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to interface professionally with contractors, department personnel, vendors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Experience in civil engineering, including land development, stormwater, drainage, grading, and general civil design.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with land development and site development projects.
  • Experience with stormwater and drainage system design.
  • Experience developing grading plans and erosion control plans.
  • Familiarity with standard civil engineering design practices and construction documentation.
  • Comfort working with established CAD templates, internal drafting standards, and design go-bys.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing project priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong collaboration skills and a team-oriented mindset.

Work Environment

This position is based onsite at an energy-focused facility in Birmingham. You will work primarily in an office environment using AutoCAD Civil 3D and the Microsoft Office Suite to develop civil designs and construction drawing packages. The role involves collaboration with internal departments, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders in a fast-paced, project-driven setting. Some limited travel to power generation sites within the broader service footprint may be required for site familiarity and field documentation. Onsite work may involve occasional visits to active construction or industrial facilities, where adherence to safety protocols and appropriate attire and personal protective equipment is expected.

This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.
