A growing construction company in Birmingham is seeking a motivated Staff Accountant to support their financial operations. This role plays a vital part in ensuring accurate reporting, maintaining strong financial controls, and supporting the overall accounting function of the organization.

Position Overview

The Staff Accountant will be responsible for general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting support, and compliance. This role works closely with internal departments, vendors, and the finance team to ensure financial data is accurate, timely, and aligned with company policies and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and post journal entries and accruals
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure financial accuracy
  • Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and intercompany transactions
  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support the development and review of annual budgets
  • Assist with financial projections and performance analysis

Compliance & Audit Support

  • Ensure adherence to GAAP and internal controls
  • Assist with internal and external audits
  • Monitor financial risk and support compliance with company policies and industry standards

Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare financial reports and support tax return preparation
  • Provide data and insights to leadership to support decision-making

Administrative & Cross-Functional Support

  • Respond to vendor inquiries and assist with accounts payable and receivable documentation
  • Maintain organized financial records
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure financial control and operational alignment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with accounting software such as Sage, Viewpoint/Vista, or ComputerEase is a plus
  • Solid understanding of GAAP principles
