Specialist-Patient Access at North Mississippi Health Services Job Summary The Patient Access Specialist supports the organization’s financial health by collecting insurance information, processing point‑of‑service collections, and providing direct customer service to patients and their families. The role requires strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills and is performed under the guidance of the Patient Access Manager. Scheduling Schedule, reschedule, pre‑certify, check medical necessity, and pre‑register patients for appointments, diagnostic tests and outpatient procedures. Obtain and verify patient demographics, insurance eligibility, and benefits. Inform patients and clinical staff of test instructions and appointment details. Notify patients of scheduled appointment dates, times, and locations. Patient Experience Collect confidential patient identification, records, signatures, and payment information while enforcing HIPAA guidelines. Communicate the organization’s revenue cycle and financial policies, including estimates, charity plans, and payment options. Provide bedside registration, obtain consent signatures, and collect insurance information to ensure accurate medical record entry. Collections & Financial Arrangements Provide estimates to guarantors for elective procedures and collection attempts at pre‑registration or point of service. Administer ABNs when necessary and secure accounts before service. Process accounts accurately and timely in accordance with best practices and regulatory guidelines. Denials Management Correct front‑end errors in real time to minimize denial throughput. Develop strategies for accurate, timely demographic information. Review post‑service denials to improve front‑end processes. Identify trends, report issues, and propose solutions to leadership. Implement corrective actions to reduce incoming denials. Contract Management Maintain familiarity with payer methodologies and communicate accurate estimates to patients and leadership. Manage expected reimbursement and ensure appropriate patient payments prior to service. Partner with the business office for estimate transparency. Analyze estimate variances and report trends to leadership. Qualifications Education Bachelor's Degree in Business, Healthcare, Coding, or equivalent – required. Associate’s Degree considered; may replace a bachelor’s degree if applicant has ≥4 years of patient access, claims, billing/follow‑up, or revenue‑cycle experience. High School Diploma or GED considered; must have ≥8 years of related experience to replace a bachelor’s degree. Licenses & Certifications None specified. Work Experience 1–3 years of relevant experience. Skills Registration system proficiency; Medicare/Medicaid/third‑party liability/worker’s compensation knowledge. Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Knowledge of state/federal regulations for registration and collections. Excellent analytical, negotiating, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Strong verbal and written communication. Ability to prioritize and manage tasks efficiently. Project implementation and evaluation skills. Customer‑service orientation and positive, caring attitude.
