Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200 -000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • The basic requirements for employment as a VHA social worker are prescribed by statute in 38 U.S.C. § 7402(b)(9) - as amended by section 205 of Public Law 106-419 - enacted November 1 - 2000
  • To qualify for appointment as a social worker in VHA - all applicants must meet the following: a

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3 - section A - paragraph 3g this part)

  • Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
  • Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited
  • A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work
  • Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work

  • Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level

  • In all cases - social workers must actively pursue meeting state prerequisites for licensure or certification starting from the date of their appointment
  • Failure to become licensed or certified within the prescribed amount of time will result in removal from the GS-0185 social worker series and may result in termination of employment

  • In addition to the experience above - the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Ability to utilize a Veteran centric approach when providing interventions and counseling for Veterans - their family members - caregivers - and survivors
  • (b) Ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and their family members - and to formulate and implement a treatment plan - identifying the Veterans problems - strengths - weaknesses - coping skills - and assistance needed
  • (c) Ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals - families - and groups to achieve treatment goals
  • This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive - problem solving - or crisis intervention techniques
  • (d) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with clients - staff - and representatives of community agencies
  • (e) Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses - disabilities - and treatment procedures
  • This includes acute - chronic - and traumatic illnesses/injuries
  • common medications and their effects/side effects
  • and medical terminology
  • Social Worker - GS-11 Experience and Licensure
  • Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings - (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level

  • In addition to meeting basic requirements - a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting

  • In addition to the experience above - candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of community resources - how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services - and ability to coordinate services
  • (b) Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic - educational - and other backgrounds
  • (c) Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses - disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e
  • acute - chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries - common medications and their effects/side effects - and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan
  • (d) Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals - families - and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric medical - and social problems to achieve treatment goals
  • (e) Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers - social work graduate students - and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment

Duties

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional GS- 9 This social worker is assigned to the Mental Health Department at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care Center (CAVHCS)
  • This social worker is responsible for providing social work services to the Veteran residents of this area
  • Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) is a component of the interdisciplinary Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT)
  • The GS-9 Social Worker (SW) serves as a member of the Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) Program team in the Mental Health Service Line of the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System
  • The SW will complete outreach and engagement in treatment through freguent contact with Veterans provided via telephone and written correspondence - however face-to-face care is within the scope of this position
  • The SW will complete initial assessment of the Veteran
  • The SW will participate in the development of an individualized treatment plan using standardized algorithms to guide treatment recommendations and support evidence-based decision making
  • The SW will keep current with knowledge of the variety of clinical options available through the medical center and local community about how to refer/engage Veterans
  • The SW will review of initial assessment and treatment plan with the PCMHI Provider with Prescribing Privileges consultant and PCP - incorporating modifications of the plan as recommended
  • GS-11 The PCMHI Social Worker has experience that demonstrates the independent practice skill level in social work
  • The incumbent must be licensed by a state to practice at the independent practice level
  • The incumbent will function in support of the primary care team - Veterans and family members throughout the medical center and in community settings
  • The incumbent will run patient registry reports to facilitate care provision and to monitor quality of care
  • The incumbent will participate in weekly caseload consultation with the consulting PCMHI Provider with Prescribing Privileges or Primary Care prescribing provider
  • The incumbent will actively seek out additional ad-hoc consultation as clinically indicated
  • The incumbent will provide education and brief interventions using evidence-based techniques such as behavioral activation - motivational interviewing - and other focused treatment strategies
  • The incumbent will monitor Veteran progress using validated patient reported outcome measures
  • The incumbent will complete ongoing reviews of progress and recommendations for changes in treatment - including medication adjustments - utilizing evidence-based algorithms in consultation with the PCMH Provider with Prescribing Privileges
  • The incumbent will complete timely and thorough documentation of all patient interactions
  • The incumbent will provide same -day access to PCMHI COCM services
  • The incumbent will complete ongoing collaboration with and coordination of the Veteran's care with the treating PCP and other healthcare professionals
  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm
