Associational Mission Strategist

The Director of Missions (DOM) is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to the Calhoun Baptist Association (CBA) by serving in the following roles: primary missionary, administrative leader; equipper to CBA staff, committees, teams, pastors, ministry leaders, and churches; and encourager of churches and their pastors; and promoter of Southern Baptist doctrine, entities, and programs.
Expectations and Qualifications: The DOM shall…
1. Be a man called of God into the Gospel ministry and have a sense of being called of God into associational DOM ministry.
2. Be a person of unquestioned Christian character and deep spiritual commitment, an example of Christian discipleship, and a leader capable of making mature judgments.
3. Display a cooperative spirit in carrying out the work of the association so that this same spirit may be encouraged among the churches.
4. Adhere to The Baptist Faith and Message 2000. He must not be affiliated in any way with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) but rather hold to Southern Baptist beliefs. He should be thoroughly cooperative with the program and work of the Southern Baptist Convention and its several affiliated entities.
5. Possess experience or educational qualifications such that he will be able to effectively carry out the duties of the DOM of the CBA. Pastoral experience is preferred so that he may serve as a pastor to the pastors serving in CBA churches.
6. Have strong previous experience in personal evangelism, an effective preacher who is able to rightly handle the Word of God and passionately point people to Jesus Christ.
7. Possess the qualifications of a pastor/elder as outlined in I Timothy 3:1-9, 11.
8. Be a member in good standing with a local church in friendly cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention and, upon moving to this field, place his membership in a CBA church.
General Responsibilities: The DOM shall…
I. Serve as the primary administrator over the CBA staff and all CBA ministries.
A. Be employed by the Executive Committee of the association in accordance with the Calhoun Baptist Association Constitution, Article X.
B. Be accountable to the Executive Council through the Personnel Team, which serves as a subcommittee of the Advisory Team.
C. Meet with the Executive Council at least twice a year to report on, assess, and discuss the work of the association.
D. Meet monthly with the CBA Advisory Team to provide financial and other reports, discuss present and future needs/plans, make recommendations, seek input and guidance, and plan strategy for carrying out the mission of the CBA.
E. Work closely with the CBA Treasurer to ensure that the budget is being executed accordingly. Assist staff, committees, and other leaders in planning budget requests to implement the various ministries of the CBA. Submit an annual budget request for the operation of the CBA.
F. Supervise the CBA staff and other ministry leaders by providing direction, personal/ professional development, and essential resources needed to perform their duties in an effective manner.
G. Oversee the production of reports and publications of the Calhoun Baptist Association.
Ministerial Responsibilities: The DOM shall…
I. Serve as the primary missionary and encourager to the Calhoun Baptist Association.
A. Work with the Executive Council and the Advisory Team to communicate to CBA churches the mission of the association and encourage church cooperation.
B. Seek to promote the ministries of the Alabama Baptist State Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention to association churches.
C. Maintain a close working relationship with the state/national conventions and entities and strive to advocate for denominational doctrine and objectives to CBA churches.
D. Encourage missions’ ventures and partnerships with ALSBOM, NAMB, and IMB entities by sponsoring mission trips and/or supplying information and resources to churches.
E. Promote the Cooperative Program as well as state and national SBC offerings within the association (i.e., Myers-Mallory State Missions Offering, Annie Armstrong Easter Offering, Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, and Global Hunger Relief Offering).
F. Seek to assist declining congregations in revitalization efforts.
G. Encourage the development of new ministries within the association.
H. Strive to develop and sustain friendly relations with other denominational groups within the geographic footprint of the association. Be sympathetic with community groups seeking the betterment of the area embraced by the association.
II. Serve as the primary equipper to CBA staff/officers, committees, pastors, and other church leaders in effectively serving in their areas of ministry.
A. Serve as an ex officio member of the CBA Executive Council, the Advisory Team, as well as other committees that shall be formed.
B. Encourage all elected CBA officers and leaders and provide them with the necessary resources and training for the performance of their duties.
C. Provide training opportunities within the association to equip CBA pastors and churches in areas of spiritual health and well-being. Promote additional training and development opportunities provided by other ALSBOM and SBC entities or agencies.
III. Serve as primary shepherd and encourager of CBA churches and pastors by doing the following:
A. Become personally acquainted with every pastor within the association and visit each one on his field at times other than during worship services in order to encourage him in his ministry and strengthen an associational relationship.
B. Strive to visit each association church on a regular and equal basis and be available to speak or preach when invited or as the need arises.
C. Respond to the call of the churches for assistance as the need may arise, but recognize that each CBA church is an autonomous body.
D. Lead and promote regular fellowship among both full-time and bi-vocational CBA pastors and their families.
E. Seek to promote harmony and encourage cooperative endeavors among CBA churches in the areas of prayer, ministry, missions, evangelism, discipleship, stewardship, and fellowship.
Policies and Procedures: The DOM shall…
I. Participate in revivals and pulpit supply according to the following guidelines:
A. Outside the Association — The DOM may serve in two (2) revivals during one (1) association year as long as they do not interfere with any associational responsibilities.
B. Inside the Association — The DOM may serve in unlimited revivals/evangelistic rallies during one (1) association year as long as they do not interfere with any associational responsibilities.
C. Interim Pastorate–The DOM shall not be allowed to serve as an interim pastor. The DOM should, however, be available to assist church search committees as requested and is expected to maintain a network of trustworthy interim pastor recommendations.
D. Pulpit Supply–The DOM shall be allowed to provide pulpit supply for a church within the Association, but no more than two consecutive Sundays per church within the CBA.
II. Adhere to the following guidelines regarding denominational meetings, conferences, mission trips, and other times away from the associational field:
A. The DOM is expected to attend all denominational meetings that support his role and responsibilities in the association, including the annual Alabama Baptist State Convention and Southern Baptist Convention (unless providentially hindered).
B. The DOM may attend any conferences or seminars that would better equip him in his leadership role; he may also participate in association-led or other mission/vision trips as long as they do not exceed the allotted time away from the association field (as stated in C below).
C. The DOM shall not be allowed any more than two (2) consecutive weeks away from the association field without permission of the Personnel Committee of the Advisory Team.
