Job Description

The Weld Assistant supports the fabrication shop by cutting, grinding, and preparing metal stock and weldments for fit-up and welding operations. This role uses angle grinders, cut-off saws, and hand tools to dress joints, remove material, and ensure parts meet dimensional requirements. The Weld Assistant also serves as a fire watch during hot work, monitoring for ignition hazards and helping maintain a safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Cut metal stock to specified lengths using band saws, chop saws, or cold saws in accordance with work instructions and drawings.
  • Grind and dress weld joints using angle grinders and bench grinders to remove material, deburr edges, and prepare surfaces for welding.
  • Prepare weld joints by grinding, cleaning, and fitting up components to support welders in producing quality welds.
  • Use hand and power tools to perform fabrication support tasks such as cleaning, squaring, and aligning parts.
  • Serve as fire watch during hot work operations, continuously monitoring the work area for sparks, slag, and other ignition hazards.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area by removing scrap, managing grinding dust, and organizing tools and materials.
  • Inspect prepared parts visually to confirm they meet dimensional and surface preparation requirements before welding.
  • Follow all shop safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe operation of saws and grinders.
  • Communicate effectively with welders and other fabrication team members to coordinate work and meet production needs.

Essential Skills

  • Experience operating band saws, chop saws, or cold saws to cut metal stock to length.
  • Experience using angle grinders and bench grinders for deburring, grinding, and surface preparation.
  • Ability to prepare weld joints through grinding, cleaning, and fit-up in support of welders.
  • Previous experience working with common hand and power tools in a fabrication or similar environment.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures while acting as fire watch during hot work operations.
  • Basic understanding of metal fabrication processes and weld preparation.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions and communicate clearly with shop personnel.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in a production, manufacturing, or fabrication shop environment.
  • Comfort working with grinders, saws, and other rotating equipment.
  • Attention to detail when preparing joints and cutting material to length.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability in supporting welders and production schedules.
  • Willingness to learn additional fabrication and welding support tasks over time.

Work Environment

The role is based in a production and manufacturing fabrication shop. Work takes place around metal fabrication equipment, including band saws, chop saws, cold saws, angle grinders, and bench grinders. The environment involves regular exposure to noise, sparks, and metal dust, with appropriate safety procedures and protective equipment in place. The position is hands-on and shop-floor based, requiring comfort working around welding operations and hot work in an industrial setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Madison, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
