About the Role:
The Corporal is an important entry level first line leadership role that is responsible for supervising departmental activities in the absence of a superior officer; patrolling the community and responding to complaints; making arrests for felonies and misdemeanors; serving warrants and subpoenas, testifying in court; and ensuring the overall safety and wellbeing of the Tribe and Tribal Community. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of this position. PCI Employees are expected to perform all duties and responsibilities necessary to meet the goals and objectives of applicable programs and departmental objectives, as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs routine law enforcement duties, including responding to emergencies, accidents, public assistance requests, and enforcing tribal, state, and federal laws.
  • Supervises officers during assigned shifts, including scheduling, leave approvals, timesheets, disciplinary actions, and emergency operations.
  • Investigates crimes, interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects, collects and preserves evidence, and prepares detailed reports.
  • Oversees criminal investigations, warrant preparation, case documentation, and court testimony.
  • Reviews officer reports for accuracy and completeness and assists leadership with daily operations.
  • Coordinates staffing for special events and supports crime prevention and community outreach initiatives.
  • Assists with internal investigations, citizen complaints, and pre-employment background investigations.
  • Prepares cases for prosecution and provides administrative support for department operations.
Core Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field and/or a combination of education and training experience in law enforcement equivalent to two (2) years.
  • Must meet one of the following:
  1. Must possess a current and active Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission (APOST) certification; or
  2. Must possess another law enforcement certification, such as FLETC, BIA, DHS, FBI, or another certification deemed acceptable for transfer into Alabama by APOST; or
  3. If candidate does not have a transferable certification, the candidate must obtain Alabama (APOST) certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • If questions arise regarding the candidate’s certification status or transferability, the Chief of Police may require written clearance from APOST before the candidate is deemed eligible for hire.
  • Five (5) years of employment experience in law enforcement required.
  • Must possess or obtain BIA Special Law Enforcement Commission (S.L.E.C.) within twelve (12) months of date of hire/promotion.
  • May also be required to obtain other related commissions as identified and required after official date of hire in this position.
  • Must complete forty (40) hours of a recognized Police Supervision/Leadership training within twelve (12) months of date hire/promotion.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience in monitoring and coordinating the activities of subordinates, including general supervision, performance evaluations, disciplinary procedures, and leave approvals for a law enforcement agency with more than twenty (20) officers preferred.
  • Ability to work odd and irregular hours, as needed.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and insurable driving records according to Tribal insurance guidelines.
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal and character background check.
  • Ability to travel and participate in required training, leadership development, and other events.
  • Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities of this position adequately and successfully.
Essential Competencies:
  • Demonstrated integrity, confidentiality, and a strong record of job performance.
  • Experience conducting arrests, criminal investigations, and exercising sound independent judgment.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with tribal, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Strong communication skills and a professional reputation that fosters public trust.
  • Knowledge of tribal, federal, state, and local laws and the reservation area.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of law enforcement, including lifting up to 50 lbs., foot pursuits, and making forcible arrests.
  • Proficiency with department-issued firearms and equipment.
  • Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and perform effectively in high-stress situations.
  • Must meet all applicable law enforcement certification, medical, and training requirements and be eligible to testify in Tribal, State, and Federal Court.
