Community Cat Diversion Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the operational aspects of the Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return (TNVR) program. The main functions of this position are to educate the public on feral cats and coordinate the spay, neuter and return of community cats with the shelter, community, and colony partners.

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (“the GBHS”) is a progressive animal welfare shelter whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome homeless, abused, neglected and abandoned animals. We are committed to an open admissions policy, animal rehabilitation and a low euthanasia rate. GBHS’ open intake and adoption philosophy is a key part of our progressive mission, enabling us to save and rehome thousands of animals each year.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Respond to calls for service regarding community cat issues.
  • May need to participate in trapping and transporting community cats for the purpose of spay/neuter and release.
  • Be a community cat/TNVR information resource to all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide support to the public who have feral cat situations via phone, e-mail, and in person.
  • Assist in developing TNVR educational materials.
  • Assist in strategic plan development regarding the TNR program.
  • Maintain appropriate program records.
  • Recruit community cat volunteers.
  • Coordinate TNVR surgeries with CCC.
  • Work cohesively with other community cat partners.
  • Manage traps and equipment pertaining to department.
  • Establish department goals, plans and timelines.
  • Perform humane animal euthanasia, if requested and if certified
  • Provide other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for the mission of GBHS and a sense of humor are required.
  • Experience working in an animal shelter or impoundment center
  • 1-2 years of animal care experience
  • Previous experience in management is preferred
  • Animal welfare certification or bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Must have a safe driving record and successfully complete Motor Vehicle Report screening
  • Ability to articulate the mission of GBHS to prospective adopters, donors, volunteers and visitors
  • Superior customer service experience and skills with the ability to be friendly, helpful, and courteous on the telephone and in person
  • Enthusiasm, energy, initiative, “can do” attitude
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in an often hectic, dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • A positive attitude and ability to get along with others
  • Ability to be a team player and work collaboratively with other departments and personalities
  • Flexibility in regard to work duties and openness to changing organizational priorities and programs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Experience with Microsoft word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication are required
  • Provide support and information to other departments as needed

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of high school education or GED equivalent; customer service experience and a basic understanding of animal welfare; intermediate computer skills; meets minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds and up to 75 pounds with reasonable accommodation; ability to work well in a team environment; ability to work weekends and evenings as necessary; meets minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook. Ability to stoop, bend, lift, clean, mop, and other such assigned duties with ease and in a timely fashion.

WORK CONDITIONS

This work is performed in a high noise level area. Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic (human to animal) diseases, bites and scratches. Weekend shifts may be required. Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times. Must be able to work with and around animals of all types (cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, etc.). Exposure to conditions such as animal feces, urine, etc. and foul odors. May be exposed to animal dander, parasites and infectious diseases than can be carried and transmitted by animals. Must be able to work in an environment that provides humane euthanasia to animals. The ability to interface with angry/upset people, while remaining professional and calm.
