Position Summary
The Ship Superintendent serves as the primary operational liaison between Project Management and all production crafts during ship repair projects. This role bridges planning and execution by translating project scope, schedules, and technical requirements into coordinated, safe, and efficient work across all trades.
The Ship Superintendent ensures production activities are aligned with project objectives, schedules, budgets, safety standards, and quality requirements while maintaining clear communication among all stakeholders.
This position operates between the Ship Coordinator and Craft Superintendents, focusing on execution, coordination, and issue resolution across the full scope of ship repair activities. The Ship Superintendent reports to the Senior Ship Superintendent and Operations Manager.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Serve as the primary coordination point between Project Managers, Craft Superintendents, Foremen, production teams, and subcontractors.
Translate project scope, specifications, drawings, and schedules into executable work plans for all crafts.
Coordinate daily production activities across multiple trades to ensure work is properly sequenced, efficient, and safe.
Lead daily production meetings to review progress, resolve conflicts, and prioritize work.
Monitor project progress against established schedules and proactively identify risks, constraints, or resource gaps.
Reinforce craft and subcontractor adherence to project schedules by driving priorities, sequencing work, and escalating impacts or delays when necessary.
Coordinate manpower, equipment, and material requirements in collaboration with Craft Superintendents and the Ship Coordinator.
Support change order execution by coordinating revised scope, sequencing adjustments, and craft impacts.
Interface with vessel representatives, inspectors, and quality personnel to support production activities.
Assist in resolving technical and production issues in coordination with Quality Control and Project Management.
Ensure all work complies with company policies, procedures, contractual requirements, and regulatory standards.
Promote accountability, teamwork, and clear communication across all production crafts.
HSEQ Responsibilities
Actively support compliance with the company’s HSEQ Management System.
Maintain safe working conditions across all assigned work areas.
Participate in Job Safety & Environmental Analyses (JSEAs), hazard recognition activities, safety observations, and safety meetings.
Support Craft Superintendents and Foremen in enforcing safety rules and procedures.
Immediately report incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions.
Assist with equipment and worksite HSEQ inspections as required.
Maintain all required safety training and certifications.
Support continual improvement initiatives in alignment with ISO 9001:2015 requirements.
Exercise stop-work authority when conditions present imminent risk to life, health, or the environment.
Education, Experience & Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or GED.
Extensive experience in ship repair, marine construction, or heavy industrial operations.
Demonstrated experience coordinating multiple crafts or production teams.
Preferred
Coursework or equivalent experience in production management, industrial technology, or a related field.
Experience working directly with project management and production leadership teams.
Prior supervisory or lead experience in a shipyard environment.
Knowledge & Skills
Strong working knowledge of ship repair operations and multi-craft coordination.
Ability to read, interpret, and apply blueprints, specifications, and technical drawings.
Understanding of production sequencing, work packaging, and schedule-driven execution.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface across all organizational levels.
Effective problem-solving skills with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
Working knowledge of shipyard safety regulations, hazards, and quality requirements.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams).
Basic working knowledge of Primavera (P6) or similar project scheduling software.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Ability to work onboard vessels, in dry docks, and throughout shipyard environments.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders and stairs, and navigating confined spaces.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Ability to work in hot, cold, humid, and inclement weather conditions.
Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibration, moving equipment, and other industrial hazards.
Ability to safely access elevated work areas and work at heights.
Overtime and weekend work may be required based on project schedules and operational needs.
