But our most important resource is our people-experts across the range of scientific disciplines who team together to take on the biggest scientific challenges of our time.  The Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data Division (ACMDD) focuses on basic and applied computing research encompassing artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, computing technologies, and data and computational engineering. Our scientists and engineers apply end-to-end co-design principles to advance future energy-efficient computing systems and design the next generation of algorithms to analyze, model, understand, and control the behavior of complex systems in science, energy, and national security. We prefer a candidate who can be **onsite** or work a hybrid schedule at our Richland campus, but we will consider applicants who are virtual. **Responsibilities** The **Future Computing Technologies Group** seeks a motivated **PhD Intern** for the fall of 2025 with a strong background in High-Performance Computing (HPC), compiler technologies, and hardware design. Knowledge in scientific distributed computing and/or electronic design automation is preferred but not strictly required. The duration of the internship is flexible from a minimum of 3 months. The internship can be either remote or onsite based on the availability of the candidate. The candidate will be expected to use and familiarize themselves with world-leading technologies which are available at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, including open-source compiler tools, hardware design tools, and advanced architecture testbeds. The expected outcomes involve high-quality research work represented by peer-review publications and, potentially, updates to an open-source software toolchain. **Responsibilities and Accountabilities** + Design novel algorithms and methodologies for hardware design and electronic design automation + Develop novel parallel algorithms for scientific workflows + Exploitation of design space exploration techniques for hardware design and scheduling technologies + Participate in the development and publication of peer-reviewed publications to present the work + Develop methods for acceleration of data analytics algorithms leveraging highly heterogeneous high performance computing systems **Qualifications** Minimum Qualifications: + Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. + Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
