Primary Purpose of the Position

The Fitter will lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, bridge parts, and pressure vessels, using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements.

Essential Functions / Duties

· Expertly lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies with precision, utilizing tools such as straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers to meet exact specifications.

· Performs critical tack-welding of components and assemblies using FCAW, SMAW, or other specialized welding equipment.

· Adheres strictly to applicable welding procedures, including AWS and AISC standards, ensuring the highest quality and compliance.

· Execute precise tack welds at various elevations—ground level, above ground, and below ground—in any required position, demonstrating versatility and skill.

· Prepares materials for welding or finishing by expertly chipping, peening, and grinding surfaces to optimal condition.

· Performs high-quality welding on structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, and tanks, often working with uncommon structural or machine metals under stringent tolerances for heat application and workmanship.

· Utilizes heat or flame to skillfully straighten materials, ensuring structural integrity and precision.

· Conducts essential gouging and scarfing operations as required, demonstrating adaptability to project needs.

· Successfully completes and passes the Tack welding test in strict accordance with AWS D1.5 standards, validating expertise.

· Interprets and executes tasks based on instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders, ensuring accurate project execution.

· Reads and interprets complex blueprints, meticulously planning the fitting operation for optimal efficiency and accuracy.

· Directs and assists in the precise handling and spreading of materials, expertly assembling them into required relationships according to detailed drawings, and accurately placing bolts, drift pins, and other fastening devices in their proper locations.

· Lays out work lines or sets up jigs for precise material positioning, when necessary, meticulously checking, squaring, and scribing all detail connections to ensure perfection.

· Ensures all work rigorously conforms to engineering drawings and specified notes, upholding the highest standards of quality.

· Maintains material integrity by cleaning surfaces through precise grinding or chipping.

· Proficiently uses Oxy-Fuel/Plasma for burning, coping, beveling, and straightening materials, and performs both major and minor layouts directly from engineering drawings.

· Applies spot paints for clear identification marks, ensuring organized and efficient workflow.

· Efficiently moves materials to and from the work area, relocates welding equipment as needed, and precisely positions component parts on tables using fixtures or jibs, performing tacking when required.

· Maintains a consistently clean and orderly work area, contributing to a safe and productive environment.

· Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of safety rules for self and others, promptly reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate authority, and performs additional duties as instructed by supervision, showcasing adaptability and commitment to team success.

Role / Department / Location Specific Requirements

The role is for 1st and 2nd shift positions

Reports to the Plant Manager

Position is based at Plants 2 and 3 in Birmingham, Alabama and Bainbridge, Ga.

Minimum Requirements

· You bring a minimum of 5 years of proven experience as a structural plate fitter, or an equivalent combination of education and training that demonstrates your expertise.

· You are proficient in welding to AWS D1.5 quality and specifications, a significant advantage in this role.

· You are adept at passing fracture critical inspections, showcasing your commitment to precision and safety.

· You are skilled in using standard layout instruments, including levels and transits, to ensure accurate work.

· You possess a working knowledge of blacksmithing procedures, adding to your versatile skill set.

· You possess excellent communication and customer service skills, enabling effective collaboration.

· You can confidently read and interpret complex shop fabrication drawings, and expertly layout, fit-up, and form material according to prints.

· You have a strong understanding of welding symbols, crucial for precise execution.

· You are highly motivated and capable of working independently, taking initiative in your tasks.

· You are physically able to perform the essential functions of this demanding role, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Requirements

· Prior experience with bridge work and heavy structural steel projects is highly valued, demonstrating your capability for large-scale, impactful endeavors.

· Experience in overhead crane operation is a significant asset, showcasing your versatility and commitment to safety.

Working Conditions
In this dynamic role, you will occasionally encounter various elements of a bustling industrial environment, including moving mechanical parts, elevated work areas, and airborne particles. You may also experience diverse weather conditions, from extreme heat to cold, as well as wet or humid environments, and exposure to chemicals. The work may involve a risk of electrical shock and vibration, with a generally moderate noise level. These conditions are integral to the exciting and varied nature of the work we do.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, and smell. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
