Job Description
The Environmental Specialist will support the Environmental Affairs Water Field Services organization within the water quality compliance studies group as a supplemental contract employee. This is a primarily field-based role that focuses on water quality, biological, and other environmental monitoring to help maintain environmental compliance in and around power generation facilities. The position involves applying biological, limnological, ecological, and water treatment techniques, conducting environmental studies, and collecting high-quality data that supports state and federal regulatory mandates.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field-based water quality, biological, and other environmental monitoring activities in support of regulatory compliance requirements.
- Follow accredited Field Sampling and Measurement organization procedures to collect legally defensible data for state and federal mandates.
- Perform water sampling and related environmental measurements using appropriate environmental monitoring equipment.
- Participate in fisheries studies, including identification of fish and other species within specified areas of emphasis.
- Investigate and support innovative approaches to maintain environmental compliance in and around power generation facilities using biological, limnological, ecological, and water treatment techniques.
- Assist with environmental data management, including accurate recording, organization, and reporting of field and laboratory results.
- Operate boats safely and effectively as needed to access sampling locations and conduct field studies.
- Work collaboratively in a team environment to achieve project goals and complete field and compliance-related tasks.
- Use computer applications, including MS Office, to document field activities, manage data, and prepare reports.
- Adhere to established safety and environmental protocols while working in physically demanding outdoor conditions and during occasional night and weekend assignments.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, fisheries, ecology, environmental engineering, or a closely related field, or an engineering degree.
- Alternatively, a non-degreed technician with a minimum of 3 years of experience performing groundwater sampling.
- Experience performing biological and/or water quality studies, including sampling and monitoring activities.
- Basic knowledge of environmental chemistry, limnology, fisheries, wildlife, aquatic life, and/or plant life.
- Ability to work comfortably and safely outdoors year-round, including in inclement and physically demanding weather conditions.
- Ability to operate and work with environmental monitoring equipment to collect legally defensible data.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office applications.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment toward the successful completion of shared goals.
- Experience with boat operation and comfort working on or around water in the field.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in environmental science, biology, chemistry, fisheries, ecology, geology, or environmental engineering.
- Experience with environmental sampling and monitoring, including water sampling and groundwater sampling.
- Familiarity with data management practices related to environmental and compliance studies.
- Interest in building experience within the utilities industry and gaining a deeper understanding of environmental compliance measures.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to following accredited sampling and measurement procedures.
- Ability to adapt to changing field conditions and schedules, including occasional night work and weekend assignments.
Work Environment
This is a non-hazardous, field-based position with no personal protective equipment requirements and no medical monitoring requirements specified. The Environmental Specialist works primarily outdoors year-round, including in inclement and physically demanding weather conditions. The standard schedule is four days per week, with 10-hour workdays typically running from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with occasional night work and some weekend assignments as project needs arise. The role may require regular overnight stays to support projects in western territories. Work involves the use of environmental monitoring equipment, water sampling tools, and boats to access sampling locations, as well as computers and MS Office for data management and reporting. The environment emphasizes teamwork, safety, and adherence to established environmental procedures while providing opportunities to gain experience in the utilities industry and environmental compliance.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Calera, AL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
