POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Classroom Teacher, the Special Needs Assistant works with one or a small group of children providing support and supervision. The Special Needs Assistant follows an Individualized plan to accommodate the child’s special needs, social/emotional needs, physical, and intellectual growth with a focus on school readiness, to allow the child to be fully included in the classroom.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL ABILITIES AND PROCESSES:
•\tPhysical capability, strength and coordination adequate to work with (1-5) special needs children
•\tBasic computer literacy (Internet and e-mail use required)
•\tCommunicate effectively in oral and written form
•\tAbility to visually assess the health and behaviors of children
•\tAbility to closely monitor and supervise special needs child/children
•\tAbility to respond to behavioral issues with appropriate behavior management processes
•\tAbility to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation
•\tRoutine decision making such as when to communicate to teachers and parents and when changes in program are needed, when emergencies arise, etc.
•\tOccasional lifting in excess of 40 lbs., typically placing children into seats and ability to carry or drag a child in an emergency situation to a safe area
•\tDaily kneeling, stooping, bending, and sitting on the floor to attend to children’s needs
•\tOccasional climbing to enter and exit bus and sitting throughout bus routes

QUALIFICATIONS:
1.\tInterested in special needs of (3-5) children and their education.
2.\tWorking knowledge of modern office communications systems: E-mail, voice mail, computer system, and the ability to operate various office equipment: Computers, fax, photocopy, etc.
3.\tAbility to maintain records on a computer system or willing to learn.
4.\tGood verbal and written communications skills.
5.\tAccess to a privately owned vehicle with liability insurance for use in completing work responsibilities as required.
6.\tAdult and Pediatric CPR and First Aide Certifications strongly encouraged.
7.\tNo prior convictions of child abuse/neglect. Health and Welfare Background Clearance.
8.\tPhysical and TB screening upon hire.

•\tBasic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics, particularly pertaining to children with special needs.
•\tBehavior management strategies and techniques relating to children’s experiencing atypical control problems.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONAL UPON RESULTS OF THE FOLLOWING:
o\tCriminal History Registry.
o\tSuccessful Drug and Alcohol Screening.
o\tSuccessful Physical Capacities Examination and TB screen results.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.\tEnsure safety as a priority in performing all job responsibilities and ensuring adherence to the safety policy.
2.\tEnsure the classroom is a safe and healthy learning environment in regards to the child with special needs.
3.\tBecome familiar with classroom routine and participate in classroom activities.
4.\tBecome familiar with Head Start guidance and discipline policy, and general policies and procedures.
5.\tMaintain confidentiality regarding Head Start children and families.
6.\tImplement and monitoring IEP and IFSP goals including attending IEP and IFSP meetings.
7.\tAssists in setting up and maintaining the least restrictive environment for the Special Needs
child/children.
8.\tPlans individual activities for special needs children
9.\tPlans individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social/emotional, and motor skills.
10.\tEncourages speech and language development through appropriate modeling and questioning.
11.\tAssists with feeding and diapering, if necessary for special needs children
12.\tUse positive reinforcement and promotes positive self-esteem, when working with children, families and staff
13.\tAttends staff meeting, trainings, and other meeting as required.
14.\tDocuments the child’s progress in current ongoing assessment program.
15.\tAssists teaching staff with the Home Visits and Parent Conferences for Special needs children.
16.\tSupports the goals and objectives of classroom activities by preparing materials, obtaining required supplies or equipment for special needs children.
17.\tProvides customer service in reception, greeting and directing visitors at the site.
18.\tFollows step-by-step activities as outlined in content area plans, policies, and procedures.

Berean Baptist Head Start provides quality education and family support services to children ages three to five and their families in Perry County. During FY22, Berean Baptist Head Start offered center-based Head Start services to young preschoolers and their families at its two locations.

Federal, state, and in-kind contributions are used to operate the County's Head Start program. The State of Alabama provides funding in the form of reimbursement through the Child and Adult Nutrition Program, and through the generous contributions of thecommunity, Berean Baptist Head Start was able to maximize its funding to ensure the provision of services during this reporting period to promote children's school readiness.

As an early childhood program, Berean Baptist Head Start provides a wide range of services which help to ensure that all enrolled children and families have the necessary support to reach their individual goals. Some of the main services available through the program include health and development screenings, nutrition services, family support, and mental health services. These services work together to ensure
that children are growing and learning, while their families are well-supported and empowered.
