Job Description

Job Summary

The Mainframe DB2 System Programmer is responsible for the installation, configuration, customization, and maintenance of IBM DB2 subsystems on z/OS mainframe environments. This role focuses on ensuring the reliability, availability, performance, and security of DB2 infrastructure while supporting application teams, database administrators, and business-critical workloads.

Key Responsibilities

DB2 Installation & Maintenance

• Install, configure, and upgrade IBM DB2 subsystems on z/OS.
• Apply PTFs, APARs, and fix packs to maintain DB2 environments.
• Customize DB2 subsystems based on business and application requirements.

System Programming & Support

• Provide technical support for DB2 subsystems, utilities, and tools.
• Troubleshoot DB2-related issues including abends, system failures, and performance bottlenecks.
• Manage DB2 catalogs, logs, buffer pools, and subsystem parameters.
• Support system IPLs, backups, and recovery procedures.

Performance & Capacity Management

• Monitor and tune DB2 subsystems for CPU, memory, and I/O efficiency.
• Optimize buffer pools, locking mechanisms, and SQL performance.
• Forecast capacity requirements and plan for upgrades or expansions.

Database & Application Support

• Work with DBAs and application developers to support database design, SQL optimization, and deployment activities.
• Provide system-level support for DB2 data sharing and high-availability features.
• Ensure DB2 subsystems integrate seamlessly with CICS, IMS, and MQ.

Security & Compliance

• Implement and maintain DB2 security in collaboration with RACF/ACF2/TSS administrators.
• Enforce compliance with SOX, ITGC, and internal security policies.
• Support audits and maintain documentation of DB2 configurations and changes.

Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity

• Define and implement DB2 backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
• Participate in DR drills and failover testing.
• Ensure RTO and RPO requirements are achieved for DB2 systems.

Change & Release Management

• Support software upgrades, patches, and new feature implementations in line with ITIL change processes.
• Document all DB2 subsystem changes, procedures, and best practices.
• Provide technical expertise during major project deployments.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Strong experience with IBM DB2 for z/OS system programming.
• Knowledge of DB2 installation, customization, and subsystem tuning.
• Experience with DB2 utilities (REORG, RUNSTATS, COPY, RECOVER, etc.).
• Familiarity with SQL, database design concepts, and performance optimization.
• Hands-on knowledge of JCL, REXX, and SMP/E for maintenance.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience as a DB2 System Programmer on z/OS.
• Exposure to DB2 Data Sharing, Parallel Sysplex, and high-availability environments.
• Experience with automation and monitoring tools (OMEGAMON, DB2 Admin Tool, etc.).
• Knowledge of related mainframe subsystems such as CICS, IMS, and MQ.
• Familiarity with ITIL processes (Incident, Problem, Change Management).
• Experience in supporting audit and compliance requirements (SOX, PCI-DSS, etc.).
