Systems Engineer
Job Description
The Systems Engineer will support and participate in the company’s Quality Management System (QMS) while serving as a key member of an engineering team integrating advanced avionics suites into various aircraft platforms and systems integration laboratories. This role combines systems engineering, requirements management, and hands-on troubleshooting in both laboratory and hangar environments. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, growing aviation organization, can wear multiple hats, and contributes to complex, multi-aircraft integration programs across international customers.
Responsibilities
- Support and actively participate in the company’s Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring engineering work aligns with established processes and standards.
- Serve as a core member of an engineering team focused on integrating advanced avionics systems into various aircraft and systems integration laboratory environments.
- Establish, track, and maintain system and subsystem requirements, ensuring they are clearly defined, documented, and traceable throughout the project lifecycle.
- Use requirements management tools, such as DOORS, to develop, track, and model requirements, including modeling system construction and behavior.
- Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methods and tools to model system architectures and support system design and integration activities.
- Oversee or perform hands-on troubleshooting of avionics components, wiring harnesses, and related systems in laboratory and hangar environments when necessary.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering and technical teams to ensure successful integration, verification, and validation of avionics systems on multiple aircraft platforms.
- Prepare clear, concise documentation, including technical reports, requirements documents, and system descriptions to support engineering reviews and project milestones.
- Develop and deliver professional presentations and technical briefings using PowerPoint and other tools to communicate status, issues, and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Manage multiple engineering tasks and projects simultaneously, prioritizing work to meet deadlines while maintaining high quality and attention to detail.
- Exercise sound judgment and discretion when working under pressure in a fast-paced environment, proactively resolving issues and identifying improvements.
- Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form with team members, leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrate a proactive, self-directed approach to problem solving, taking initiative to figure things out and drive tasks to completion.
- Perform all other engineering-related tasks as assigned by leadership in support of ongoing and new aviation programs.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
- 8–20 years of experience in systems engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Expert knowledge and experience in establishing, tracking, and maintaining system requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
- Hands-on experience using DOORS or a similar requirements management tool to develop, track, and model requirements and system construction.
- Practical experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts and tools, including the ability to model system construction and architectures.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense SECRET clearance. No clearance required to start!
- Strong proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced skills in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent written communication skills with demonstrated experience documenting technical work, writing reports, and preparing clear engineering documentation.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to brief technical content to diverse audiences.
- Effective time management and organizational skills, with a high level of attention to detail.
- Proven ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment while exercising sound judgment and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver work in a timely and efficient manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in aviation or aerospace, ideally with experience on aircraft such as Black Hawk, Airbus platforms, helicopters, or similar aviation systems.
- Experience working in an aviation-focused organization, research center, or aerospace company, with the ability to operate effectively in a smaller, agile environment.
- Comfort wearing multiple hats and contributing across different phases of the engineering lifecycle, from requirements and design through integration and test.
- Strong presentation skills, including the ability to build and deliver clear, visually effective PowerPoint briefings.
- A proactive, self-starter mindset, with a go-getter attitude and the ability to independently figure out solutions to complex problems.
- Experience collaborating in multidisciplinary teams within laboratory and hangar environments.
- Familiarity with quality management systems and process-driven engineering environments.
Work Environment
This role operates within a small, well-run, and growing aviation organization that emphasizes productivity, flexibility, and trust. The company follows a four 10-hour workday schedule, providing every Friday off, and focuses on getting the work done without micromanaging. The environment includes both office and engineering lab spaces, as well as active hangars with up to approximately 30 helicopters and multiple aircraft on site. Engineers work closely with aircraft and advanced avionics systems, supporting programs for a range of international customers while the organization expands its facilities with additional hangars and an R&D-focused area.
