We are looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to oversee end-to-end payroll operations for a multi-location workforce based in Birmingham, Alabama. This contract-to-permanent position is ideal for a hands-on, detail-oriented individual who can ensure payroll accuracy, coordinate effectively with internal leadership and external payroll partners, and support a high-volume environment with strong attention to detail. The role is fully in-office and offers the opportunity to step into a key leadership position with supervisory responsibility.
Responsibilities:• Manage complete payroll processing for a workforce distributed across six locations, ensuring timely and accurate pay administration.
• Oversee multi-state payroll activities and confirm compliance with applicable wage, tax, and reporting requirements.
• Review, approve, and reconcile payroll data before submission to the payroll provider.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for communication with the external payroll system provider regarding payroll execution and tax-related matters.
• Supervise and support one direct report, providing guidance on daily payroll tasks and issue resolution.
• Partner closely with the Controller to address payroll questions, reporting needs, and process oversight.
• Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, employee pay concerns, and approval issues in a timely manner.
• Maintain organized payroll records and contribute to consistent, efficient payroll operations in an in-office setting.• Demonstrated experience managing full-cycle payroll from data review through final approval and issue resolution.
• Background handling multi-state payroll in a complex employee environment.
• Experience supporting payroll populations of several hundred employees, including high-volume processing demands.
• Working knowledge of ADP Workforce Now.
• Prior leadership or supervisory experience within a payroll function.
• Strong understanding of payroll compliance, controls, and payroll-related communications with third-party providers.
• High level of accuracy, discretion, and organizational skill in managing sensitive employee information.
