Junior Underwriter

Job Summary:
Works with and provides support to senior underwriting staff and mortgage loan originators to underwrite conventional, FHA and VA mortgage loans in accordance with all applicable regulations and guidelines. Assists senior underwriting staff with review of loan applications and associated documentation to ensure loans meet underwriting guidelines. Accepts or denies documentation according to agency and senior underwriting requirements.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reviews and analyzes loan transactions, title and credit reports, income/asset documentation and collateral as requested by senior underwriter. Analyzes, reviews, and compares data against AUS decisions and pre-determined guidelines.
- Works with senior staff to confirm or override AUS decision based on available information. Clears conditions within designated authority level as outlined in credit and risk policy procedures. Effectively communicates all conditions and requirements to loan originator in a timely manner.
- Provides justification and documents circumstances resulting in override decisions. Works with senior underwriter, mortgage loan officer and loan processor to resolve outstanding questions. Complies with all established policies and guidelines governing the review, analysis, and processing of mortgage loan applications.
- Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education:
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting or a related discipline OR a combination of education and related experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree
Minimum Experience:
- Up to two years of underwriting experience or four years of mortgage loan processing experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Analytical skills and the ability to think critically.
- Good mathematical skills and the ability to accurately evaluate financial information and valuations.
- Assessment skills and the ability to review information in complete detail.
- Good communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree is preferred.
