Job Description
About Company:
About Company:
We are a local community-based health organization that aims to be an incarnation of love, peace and justice by guiding our patients through their journey toward physical, mental and social well-being, and to be a center for transformational medical education and primary care training in a rural and international context, modeling and exhorting the next generation of medical professionals in a career of excellence, conscientiousness and compassion.
Our mission statement flows from our affirmation that our purpose is to love God and show His glory by walking in the steps of Jesus and ministering the love of Christ.
Cahaba Medical Care is a Community Health Center (FQHC), accredited as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and Joint Commission. We have locations throughout central Alabama serving Bibb, Perry, Chilton, Shelby, Wilcox, and Jefferson Counties. Our health centers provide comprehensive primary care services, including treatment and management of chronic and acute diseases; preventative care and cancer screenings; pediatric care; women’s health services; prenatal care and obstetrics; dermatological services; geriatrics; sports medicine services; mental healthcare; dental services and much more.
SERVING THE UNDERINSURED & UNINSURED
"From the time we opened in 2004 we made the decision to never turn away a patient due to inability to pay. We have held to our promise even when unemployment in the area went from 3% to 15% and more patients found themselves without insurance.” —Dr. John Waits
Cahaba Medical Care provides high-quality health services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay by offering a discounted, sliding fee schedule based on income and family size. While this has been the mission of the clinic since its founding, our capabilities have continued to develop and grow through our designation as a nonprofit, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). As an FQHC, we are stewards of annual federal funding that allows us to enhance our services to those without insurance and to those facing hardship - whether medical, social, financial or emotional.
About the Role:
The Physician Fellow position is designed to provide advanced clinical training and specialized expertise in a chosen medical subspecialty within the healthcare and social assistance sector. This role involves delivering high-quality patient care while engaging in rigorous academic and research activities to contribute to medical knowledge and improve treatment outcomes. The fellow will work closely with attending physicians, multidisciplinary teams, and patients to develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans tailored to complex cases. This position serves as a critical bridge between residency training and independent practice, emphasizing both clinical excellence and scholarly development. Ultimately, the fellow will emerge as a highly skilled physician prepared to assume leadership roles in clinical practice, research, or academic medicine.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
- Successful completion of an accredited residency program in a relevant specialty.

- Fellowship training or experience in the specific subspecialty related to the position.
- Advanced certifications relevant to the subspecialty (e.g., ACLS, PALS).
- Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and clinical informatics.
- Demonstrated leadership or teaching experience in clinical settings.
Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive patient care under supervision, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up.
- Participate actively in clinical rounds, case discussions, and multidisciplinary team meetings to optimize patient outcomes.
- Engage in research projects, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings through presentations and publications.
- Contribute to educational activities by teaching medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records in compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
Skills:
The required clinical skills enable the fellow to perform thorough patient evaluations, develop differential diagnoses, and implement evidence-based treatment plans effectively. Strong communication skills are essential for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, educating patients and families, and presenting clinical findings clearly. Research skills facilitate the design and execution of studies that advance medical knowledge and improve clinical protocols. Proficiency with electronic medical records and data management tools supports accurate documentation and efficient workflow. Preferred skills such as leadership and teaching enhance the fellow's ability to mentor junior colleagues and contribute to a positive learning environment.
