**Water Resources Engineer**
**WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE**
+ The position will be located in Birmingham, Alabama.
+ The position is part of a team that works remotely beyond regular business hours and during weekends to support real-time systems.
+ The position will be hybrid (four days per week required in the office), combining both office-based and remote work.
**Description:**
The position will fill a water resources engineer in the Southern Company hydro organization. Southern Company owns and operates hydro generating plants across several watersheds. Reservoir management is responsible for the implementation of the overall water control plan of these watersheds which includes operational forecasting, flood control, and drought management. Reservoir operations uses software systems and data from many sources to implement the water control plan: hydrologic equipment and instrumentation, weather forecasts, and historical operational information. A remote network of real-time instrumentation is also maintained by reservoir management personnel and contractors including rain, stage and temperature sensors. Reservoir management also provides watershed modeling using river analysis software. To facilitate these functions, computer systems and a software suite referred to as HOMS (Hydro Optimization Management System) are also operated and maintained by reservoir management. This position will support the hydro reservoir management team with these activities.

**Education and Experience:**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required
**A basic understanding of:**
+ Water resource management
+ Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
+ Watershed modeling
+ Fluid mechanics
+ Computer model development and configuration
+ Programming and scripting languages
**Familiar with:**
+ Gaging systems and equipment
+ Data collection and dissemination

+ Supports work outside of a traditional work schedule, for example during flood control operations forecasts are developed and updated during a rain event
