Mechanic

Calvert, AL
Job Title: Maintenance Technician / Mechanic Job Description

This role is responsible for the upkeep, repair, and troubleshooting of a facility’s equipment, machinery, and physical structures. The Maintenance Technician ensures operations run safely and efficiently by shifting from reactive repairs to proactive preventive maintenance, while supporting overall facility reliability and performance.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance by conducting routine inspections, cleaning and lubricating machinery, and replacing filters, lightbulbs, and other consumable components to reduce the risk of equipment failure.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical issues on a wide range of industrial equipment, ensuring that machinery operates safely and efficiently.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical problems, including identifying faults, replacing components, and restoring systems to proper working order.
  • Identify and repair hydraulic and pneumatic system issues, including leaks, pressure problems, and component failures.
  • Handle general facility upkeep and repairs, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, drywall work, and masonry to maintain a safe and functional environment.
  • Use hand and power tools, test equipment, and measuring devices to carry out maintenance, repairs, and installations accurately.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and complex schematics to plan and execute maintenance and repair tasks correctly.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all maintenance activities, including work orders, material usage, and labor hours, often using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Follow and enforce OSHA safety standards and internal safety policies, including consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
  • Manage hazardous waste disposal in compliance with regulations and company procedures to protect people and the environment.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, colleagues, and other stakeholders to report issues, provide status updates, and coordinate repairs with minimal disruption to operations.
  • Prioritize work effectively by balancing urgent repairs with scheduled preventive maintenance tasks to maximize equipment uptime.
  • Identify root causes of equipment failures and recommend long-term solutions to prevent recurrence, rather than addressing only immediate symptoms.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Technical certifications or an Associate’s degree in Building Maintenance Technology are preferred.
  • Proficiency in mechanical maintenance and repair of industrial equipment and facility systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical systems and components.
  • Experience working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Skilled in using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and complex schematics.
  • Capability to maintain accurate records in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Strong analytical thinking skills with the ability to identify root causes of failures.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Solid time management skills to balance urgent issues with scheduled maintenance work.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in cramped spaces or adverse weather conditions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Technical certifications related to maintenance, mechanics, or building systems.
  • Associate’s degree in Building Maintenance Technology or a related technical field.
  • Experience performing facility upkeep such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, drywall, and masonry.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and industrial safety best practices.
  • Experience using CMMS or other maintenance tracking software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
