Environmental Compliance (Water) Engineer/Specialist
Job Specific Responsibilities Function as a subject matter expert supporting Alabama Power’s generation fleet with regards to NPDES permit compliance for a variety of water related challenges that span from wastewater treatment and discharge to large scale projects. Obtain and implement all required NPDES permits and water-related certifications to allow for water withdrawals and discharges. Direct site-specific studies (316a and b, etc.) for permit development and limitations. Provide technical support and coordination for legal claims. Develop and revise, as needed, facility specific compliance plans (BMP, SPCC, and FRP Plans). Work with environmental personnel across Southern Company and the Operating Companies to interpret and develop comments supporting the Company’s position regarding water regulations and policy at the state and federal levels. Develop and maintain positive relationships with regulators. Consolidate, review, and submit compliance data (DMR and TRI data, etc.) in accordance with regulatory timeframes. Job Requirements and Skills Education Requirements Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Engineering (Environmental, Civil, Chemical) or science related field (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science). Professional Engineer license in the State of Alabama, or the ability to obtain one, in an applicable engineering field is a plus. Experience Requirements Experience in writing, negotiating, and obtaining water-related environmental permits and/or consulting with environmental regulatory agencies. Familiarity with industrial plant operations and wastewater treatment is a plus. Experience organizing, planning, prioritizing and tracking multiple projects. Skills and Abilities Results oriented and proactive in maintaining compliance with all water-related laws and regulations. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers and regulatory agency personnel. Ability to communicate environmental requirements and compliance information/strategies to customers and staff. Ability to develop environmental compliance strategies, policies, procedures, and guidelines for new regulatory requirements. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and computer skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
