Senior Missile Manufacturing Engineer
Job Description
Job Description
nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is now officially a 100% ESOP company ! We value teamwork and collaboration, and this transition allows us to take that commitment to a new level . nSI empowers our customers by supplying products, services, and expertise with powerful, data driven insights that transform defense systems and improve capabilities.
nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is here to build systems that solve our nation's most challenging defense problems in an enjoyable, stimulating environment. We're looking for talented builders with high levels of curiosity and extremely strong grounding in fundamentals and engineering first principles. If you're hungry for harder problems, used to working quickly, and excited to take innovative systems from napkin to the field, this is your happy place.
We are pleased to announce the opening for a Senior Missile Manufacturing Engineer who will join our elite R&D team in Huntsville, Alabama building transformative low cost interceptors for emerging DoD applications. nSI is known for fielding revolutionary missile defense systems, pioneering step changes in RF seeker technology, introducing principled AI systems, and rapidly pioneering novel defense platforms, from space to the seabed. We're small and agile, and ready to disrupt the status quo.
Responsibilities:Our small team has developed a game-changing interferometric RF seeker technology which has significant implications for making low-complexity, low-cost, high-performance interceptors for combating raids of asymmetric threats. Our seeker approach is patented, tested, funded by multiple customers, and in high demand for emerging threats.
You will be an integral part of a team developing a best-in-class interceptor around this seeker as our manufacturing lead. Starting from your knowledge of both first principles and practical production challenges, you'll architect, rapidly prototype, and implement the manufacturing systems and processes for highly maneuverable, small diameter (120 mm and lower) surface-to-air interceptor designs. You will develop innovative manufacturing solutions that drastically reduce unit cost, establish lean production workflows, optimize for highly available supply chains, design assembly tooling and fixtures, and create quality control processes that push the boundaries of what's achievable at low-cost in high-volume production. Your work will span the full manufacturing lifecycle - from design for manufacturability (DFM) through production line design to quality assurance and cost optimization. Automated assembly, statistical process control, lean manufacturing principles, and cost reduction strategies should be your bread and butter.
You'll interface directly with design engineers across all disciplines to ensure manufacturability is built into every component from day one. This includes inputs to safe facility design, developing modular assembly approaches that minimize touch labor, designing production processes that scale from prototype quantities to thousands of units, and creating manufacturing systems that maintain tight tolerances while driving down recurring costs.
As part of our small, elite team, you'll be critical to taking manufacturing concepts from whiteboard sketches to pilot production lines to full-rate production in record time.
Basic Qualifications:Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree minimum in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or similar technical field
- Seven years of full-time professional experience in defense manufacturing roles
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain an active Secret Security Clearance
Technical Competencies - You must demonstrate expertise in:
- Solid rocket motor and explosives safety, especially as relates to assembly processes and facility design
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles for aerospace systems
- Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies
- Automated and semi-automated assembly system design
- Tooling, fixture, and jig design for precision assembly
- Statistical process control (SPC) and quality management systems
- Cost modeling and should-cost analysis for defense systems
- Impact of manufacturing choices on unit cost, production rate, quality, and system performance
Core Technical Skills:
- Deep understanding of aerospace manufacturing processes including machining, composites, additive manufacturing, and electronics assembly
- Sufficient technical expertise to understand the impact of tolerances, material selection, assembly sequence, test requirements, and production volume on manufacturing approach
- Proficiency in rapid prototyping of manufacturing processes from concept through production implementation
- Demonstrated ability to develop innovative manufacturing solutions that dramatically reduce cost while maintaining quality
- Strong background in production planning, capacity analysis, and supply chain management
- Experience with missile-specific manufacturing challenges including explosives handling, clean room assembly, and system integration
Software & Tools:
- CAD/CAM software for tooling design and manufacturing planning
- ERP/MRP systems for production planning
- Statistical analysis software (Minitab, JMP, or similar)
- Cost modeling tools
- Discrete event simulation software for production line optimization
- Experience with small diameter supersonic missile platforms
- Directly taking a missile system from prototype to production
- Experience with AS9100 or similar aerospace quality standards
