JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Streets & Facilities Supervisor, the employee performs the full range of general carpentry skills ranging from new construction to basic repair including rough and finish carpentry. The employee performs complex and specialized building maintenance tasks in the areas of cabinetmaking, carpentry, building structural systems, roofing, and building finishes. The employee also constructs concrete forms for sidewalk installation and repair, storm drains, and curbs throughout the City. Employee receives assignments from supervisor and is responsible for ensuring materials, equipment, and supplies are obtained for work assignment. The employee organizes project assignments and maintains records and daily logs for the duration of an assignment. The employee performs manual labor, bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting. Work is performed under established procedures with regular inspections during progress with final inspection of completed work. This is a fully qualified job in the construction and maintenance job classification. The employee may also operate equipment on a job site to the level the employee is trained. This job is considered safetysensitive and is subject to pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

Essential Functions


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: General Carpentry. Employee performs the full range master carpentry skills from rough construction up to and including finish work. Employee builds and repairs City structures and buildings, cabinets and select furniture.
  1. Reviews and follows blueprints and building plans to ensure work meets the needs of the City.
  2. Estimates time and materials required to complete a project.
  3. Constructs new structures from the foundation to completion.
  4. Performs complex and varied building construction, maintenance, and renovation tasks in the cabinetmaking, carpentry, structural, and building finishes areas.
  5. Measures, cuts, and shapes wood, plastic, and other materials.
  6. Constructs and installs building frameworks, including walls, floors, doorframes, and molding.
  7. Constructs walls, partitions, and dividers.
  8. Lays out flooring, roofing or drywall ensuring they are level and compatible with other project work.
  9. Constructs case work and mill work.
  10. Carves, assembles, and repairs furniture, shelves, and other items; installs where designated.
  11. Inspects, repairs, and replaces damaged wood, framework, or other structures and fixtures.
  12. Repairs structural components such as framing and headwalls and installs building components such as doors and windows.
  13. Designs and constructs cabinets and shelving for projects.
  14. Performs intricate finish and trim work of carpentry projects.
  15. Builds scaffolding and other construction structures to support projects.
  16. Performs emergency and minor repairs to roofing systems, including shingles, built-up membrane, and standing-seam metal.
  17. Assesses repair requirements for roofing work to be performed by others and monitors the performance of the repair activity.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Street Construction and Maintenance Work. Employee performs concrete form layout and constructs forms for sidewalk repair, storm drains, curbing, and drain boxes. May operate various equipment in support of street maintenance operations.
  1. Reviews construction blueprints for correctness.
  2. Takes measurements and estimates requirement wood and materials.
  3. Shoots elevations and determines correct slope to ensure proper flow will be achieved.
  4. Measures and cuts materials to build forms for concrete pours.
  5. Spreads, rakes, and finishes concrete to complete a pour.
  6. Operates select pieces of equipment to support street repair and maintenance such as dump truck, boom truck, backhoe, and front-end loader.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

Assists with City special events such as placing barricades and barriers.
  1. Assists with traffic control as assigned.
  2. Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
  3. Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  3. Knowledge of all levels of carpentry and construction from rough to finish work.
  4. Knowledge of project management methods and techniques.

  6. Knowledge of street maintenance methods and techniques.
  7. Knowledge of storm drain maintenance.
  8. Knowledge and skill in operating hand, machine, and power tools and basic industrial equipment.
  9. Knowledge of safety rules including accident causation and prevention.
  10. Communication skills to effectively communicate internally and externally, both orally and in writing; and communicate with the public in a manner reflecting positively on the Department and City.
  11. Verbal skills to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, the general public, over the telephone and two-way radio.
  12. Reading skills to understand and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, engineering drawings, technical manuals, equipment maintenance manuals, building codes and state and federal regulations, procedures, and instructions.
  13. Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete material lists, routine forms, and records using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  14. Math skills to perform calculations related to construction and estimating.
  15. Ability to maintain professional attitude.
  16. Ability to organize, prioritize work projects and multi-task.
  17. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  18. Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and technical drawings for a project.
  19. Ability to use hand, machine, power tools, and basic industrial equipment.
  20. Ability to use various measuring devices.
  21. Ability to accurately estimate time and material cost for a project.
  22. Ability to use personal protective equipment as required.
  23. Ability to deal with all contacts in a courteous and patient manner.
  24. Ability to handle irate individuals.
  25. Ability to handle dynamic situations in a calm and courteous manner.
  26. Ability to drive.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in the construction and maintenance field; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.
  3. Possess a current and valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain this license within six (6) months or employment; must be insurable.
  4. Ability to work non-standard hours and be on-call.
  5. Ability to travel overnight.
  6. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

Physical Demands

The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.

Work Environment


The work location is in Fairhope, AL. The environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled. Pay rate is between $16 - $18 an hour.
