JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: HEAD NURSE
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing with an Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor Degree in Nursing.
- Hold an active license from the State of Alabama to practice as a Registered Nurse.
- School Nursing experience highly preferable.
- Pediatric and teaching experience preferable.
- Experience and knowledge in dealing with health issues of children with disabilities.
- Demonstrates effective written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.
- Hold an instructor's certification in CPR/AED.
- Must be able to work flexible hour assignments throughout the school year as needed to meet students' health needs.
REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL and/or COORDINATOR OF ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
JOB GOAL:
Implement of system-wide program of health services for the district and serves as a leader and liaison between the school, the medical community and other agencies involved in the health and welfare of students.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directs the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive school health program in local schools.
- Provides direction to LPN's and RN's on appropriate health interventions.
- Utilizes a distinct clinical knowledge base for decision-making in nursing practice.
- Contributes to the education of the 504 and special education students
- with health needs by assessing the student, planning, and providing appropriate nursing care services, and serving on a multidisciplinary team for 504 and special education eligibility issues.
- Collaborates with other school professionals, parents, and caregivers to meet the health, developmental, and educational needs of the students, and develops individual health care plans for students with special health care needs.
- Assists Principals and other health services employees in the maintenance and monitoring of school health records.
- Communicates and consults with parents of students who (may) have health problems.
- Communicates and consults with doctors, public health officials and other health care providers as appropriate.
- Maintains inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
- Provides in-service training for staff related to CPR, Standard Precautions, Blood-Borne Pathogens Exposure Plan, and other topics to meet the health needs of employees and students.
- Plans, implements and supervises health program screenings and activities such as vision, hearing, spinal, height, weight, asthma, medication administration and documentation, immunization assessment and follow-up.
- Provides home or hospital visits when needed.
- Delegates and supervises in the district.
- Assists in the preparation of budgets for health services.
- Assumes responsibility of notifying administrator (s) of inappropriate and/or unsafe performance of health services for students by LPN's or other school staff.
- Assesses and manages communicable health problems in the school population such as pediculosis, scabies, impetigo, ringworm, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Principal and/or Coordinator of Elementary Education.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month contract. Salary according to appropriate current salary schedule. Exempt position.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy.
SALARY: Appropriate to the current salary schedule for Registered Nurse.
