About the Role:
The Creek Language Apprentice I supports the preservation and revitalization of the Creek Language through grammar-based and immersion learning. The Apprentice develops conversational skills, verb conjugation, sentence formation, and the ability to lead Pre-K language classes. Successful completion of established proficiency and performance requirements is required for advancement to Creek Language Apprentice II. Other duties may be assigned to support program and departmental goals.
  • Must plan, teach, and pass the teaching evaluation for Pre-K classes that is to be given by the Supervisor-Creek Language.
  • After successfully completing the teaching evaluation and after successfully completing six (6) months of service as an Apprentice I may sit for the Creek Language Apprentice II exam.
  • A three (3) month waiting period is required between testing attempts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Train with the Creek Language Supervisor and Instructor to develop skills for community language teaching and resource support.
  • Participate in mentor-apprenticeship training and immersion-based learning opportunities.
  • Build Creek Language speaking and writing skills through daily practice, conversation, cultural events, journaling, and transcription activities.
  • Develop skills to teach Pre-K Creek Language classes using age-appropriate instructional techniques and materials.
  • Assist with creating lesson plans, teaching materials, and language-learning resources.
  • Assist with teaching Creek Language classes and teach classes as assigned.
  • Participate in evaluations and study planning to identify areas for improvement and strengthen language skills.
  • Assist with organizing and maintaining a database/catalog of Creek Language materials.
  • Maintain quarterly inventory of Creek Language Program supplies and submit reports as assigned.
  • Support Cultural Department events, programs, and functions.
  • Work with Tribal departments and entities to promote linguistically and culturally relevant programs and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Core Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required or currently enrolled and successfully complete a GED program within six (6) months from start date as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must possess certification of “Mandatory Reporter Training” or obtain during the first week of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain First Aid/CPR certification or obtain within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Must possess certification of “ServSafe Training” or obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Knowledgeable in the Native American culture, especially Poarch Creek culture.
  • Ability to work odd and irregular hours, as needed.
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal and character background check.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and insurable driving record according to Tribal insurance guidelines.
  • Ability to travel and participate in required training, leadership development, and other events.
  • Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities of this position adequately and successfully.
