Position Summary:

The Dental Hygienist assists dentist by cleaning, scaling and polishing teeth; taking and processing x-rays; and providing instruction on oral hygiene to patients, QOLHS personnel and the public.

1. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

2. Assists dentist in providing oral health care to patients.

3. Removes plaque, calculus, and stains from natural and restored surfaces of teeth by scaling, polishing, fluoridation and flossing.

4. Obtains pocket depths and performs periodontal charting.

5. Provides gingival curettage and root planing.

6. Provides application of topical agents, including anesthetics, desensitizing agents, and topical fluoride.

7. Provides placement of temporary restorations of a medicinal nature, periodontal dressings, and alveolar sockets dressings.

8. Completes removal of temporary restorations using hand instruments, periodontal dressings, alveolar sockets dressings, and intra-oral structures.

9. Takes dental x-rays.

10. Takes blood pressure on patients that are ten years age and above.

11. Provides patients with home care instructions regarding proper diet and the care of teeth.

12. Records data on appropriate forms and in permanent medical and dental records.

13. Maintains recall list for all patient and assists in scheduling.

14. Assures the proper maintenance of hygienist operatory, including adequate levels of supplies and the sterilization of instruments.

15. Keeps equipment in proper working order, performs weekly maintenance.
