Huntsville-Madison County 9-1-1 is seeking qualified people to join its team of dedicated 9-1-1 Calltakers .

What You'll Do
In your first 8-12 weeks, you'll have one focus: Training. You'll learn multiple systems, protocols, and processes, pass exams, and earn certifications.
You won't do it alone. Your trainer/mentor will guide you in learning the many components of 9-1-1 calltaking, including proper techniques for communicating with callers during highly emotional and stressful emergencies. And, you'll earn pay increases for training milestones!
Once you are fully qualified as a Certified Calltaker , responsibilities will include:
- Answering 9-1-1 emergency calls and routing them to police, fire, and medical agencies
- Gathering the right information and asking life-saving questions by following a computerized system that guides you step-by-step
- Using location and mapping systems to aid in locating 9-1-1 callers
The schedule for Calltakers is unique.
You'll be assigned to day (6 a.m. - 6 p.m.) or night (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) shift based on where there is an opening. Your training shift may differ from the shift you're assigned once you're a certified Calltaker .
Regardless of shift, you'll work 3 days one week and 4 the next (with eight hours of overtime pay!)
What You Bring (Job Requirements)
- High school diploma or GED. A degree isn't required but will increase your starting pay.
- Availability to work 12-hour shifts, days and nights, including some weekends and holidays
- Solid keyboard and technology proficiency
- Ability to read maps and give directions using compass points (North, South, East, West)
- Dependability and obsessive punctuality (For you, "on time" is late.)
- Strong listening, communication, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills
- Calm and decisive demeanor under pressure
- Coachable attitude and desire for continuous learning
- Successful completion of required screenings
