Job Description
This role provides critical support in a hospital laboratory by performing routine and complex clinical testing that directly impacts patient care. The Medical Lab Technician I evaluates specimens, operates and troubleshoots laboratory instruments, and ensures accurate, timely test results in accordance with established standards and procedures. This position works primarily in the blood bank and general laboratory on a third-shift schedule and offers the opportunity to transition from a contract role into a full-time position.
Responsibilities
- Determine the acceptability of patient specimens for testing according to established criteria and departmental policies.
- Perform routine and complex technical laboratory procedures in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments to ensure proper functionality and minimize downtime.
- Make sound technical decisions regarding test performance, result interpretation, and problem resolution.
- Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents, controls, and related materials to ensure reliability and accuracy.
- Report accurate and timely test results to support high-quality patient care and clinical decision-making.
- Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures on all assigned instruments and equipment.
- Identify, monitor, and replenish testing bench supplies and reagents as needed to maintain continuous workflow.
- Assist with specimen processing, including receiving, labeling, and distributing specimens when required.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following laboratory safety protocols and consistently using appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Count, manage, and organize laboratory inventory, including blood bank supplies and related materials.
- Work independently as the sole Medical Lab Technician on the shift, managing workload and prioritizing tasks effectively.
- Collaborate with other laboratory and hospital staff as needed to support patient care and departmental operations.
- Support implementation and use of laboratory information systems, including Epic and Safetrace, as applicable.
Essential Skills
- Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field, or qualifications that meet applicable CLIA or state regulatory requirements.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of clinical laboratory testing experience.
- Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from a recognized certifying agency.
- Previous hospital laboratory experience, including work in a blood bank setting.
- Ability to operate, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to make technical decisions related to testing and problem solving.
- Proficiency in performing and documenting quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Ability to work independently, particularly as the only MLT on duty during the shift.
- Strong computer skills and comfort working with laboratory information systems.
- High level of attention to detail with strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to pass a standardized color vision screening.
- Flexibility to work overtime or alternative shifts based on business needs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- State Medical Technician license, if required by local regulations.
- ASCP or AMT certification, where preferred or required by local or organizational standards.
- Experience using Epic as a laboratory or hospital information system.
- Experience using Safetrace or similar blood bank information systems.
- Experience working in a small hospital environment where staff manage broader responsibilities, including inventory counting and stocking.
- Demonstrated ability to function effectively in both independent and team-based settings.
Work Environment
This position is based in a hospital laboratory with a primary focus on blood bank and general clinical testing. The role operates on a third-shift schedule from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., with a 30-minute break, on a 7-on/7-off rotation from Wednesday to Tuesday. During the shift, you will serve as the only Medical Lab Technician on duty, making the ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities essential. The environment involves working with laboratory analyzers, blood bank systems such as Safetrace, and hospital information systems including Epic. Staff follow standard laboratory safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. The setting is a smaller hospital, which provides exposure to a wide range of tasks, including counting inventory, stocking supplies, and supporting various laboratory functions. The role begins as a contract position with the goal of conversion to a full-time opportunity, offering stability and long-term growth potential in a close-knit clinical environment.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
