Structural Plate Fitter Lead

We are seeking a Bi-Lingual Fitter to Join a leading structural fabrication team in Birmingham, Alabama, as a Fitter Lead. This is an opportunity to take on a key leadership role, managing a team of skilled fitters in the assembly and fabrication of complex metal structures, including machinery frames, bridge components, and pressure vessels. The Fitter Lead will oversee daily operations, ensure adherence to high-quality standards, and contribute to a safe, efficient, and collaborative work environment. Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise a team of fitters, overseeing project progress and ensuring work is completed to specification and on schedule.
• Lay out, position, and secure parts and assemblies using precision tools such as straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
• Perform tack-welding and welding operations using FCAW, SMAW, and other specialized equipment, adhering to AWS and AISC standards.
• Prepare materials for welding or finishing by chipping, peening, and grinding surfaces.
• Interpret and execute tasks based on instructions, blueprints, sketches, and work orders.
• Direct and assist in the handling, assembly, and precise placement of materials according to detailed drawings.
• Set up jigs, lay out work lines, and check all detail connections for accuracy.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area, promoting a safe and productive environment.
• Create and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly project reports using Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ensure all work conforms to engineering drawings and specified notes, upholding quality standards.
• Report equipment malfunctions and perform additional duties as assigned by supervision.

Qualifications

• Prefer Bi Lingual Candidate as will be leading a diverse team
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a structural plate fitter, or equivalent combination of education and training.
• Proficiency in welding to AWS D1.5 quality and specifications.
• Experience managing or leading a team of fitters.
• Ability to pass fracture critical inspections.
• Skilled in using standard layout instruments, including levels and transits.
• Working knowledge of blacksmithing procedures.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to read and interpret complex shop fabrication drawings and perform material layout and fit-up according to prints.
• Understanding of welding symbols and shop fabrication processes.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for report creation.
• Physically able to perform the essential functions of the role, with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Preferred: Experience with bridge work and heavy structural steel projects.
• Preferred: Experience operating overhead cranes.
