Position: Human Resources & Compliance Manager
Location: Semmes, Alabama
Employment Type: Full-Time | On-Site
Position Summary:
The Human Resources & Compliance Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of HR operations, payroll coordination, employee relations, compliance with federal and state laws, and managing our seasonal H-2A labor program. This role requires someone with strong organizational skills, discretion, and a proactive attitude. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing large seasonal onboarding events, and maintaining detailed regulatory documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
Payroll & Timekeeping
- Manage biweekly payroll in coordination with our third-party payroll provider
- Use SwipeClock to monitor and verify hours for both seasonal and permanent employees
- Ensure correct tax withholdings and accurate employee deductions
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive payroll and personnel information
Employee Relations & Compliance
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee HR concerns and general support
- Maintain compliance with all Alabama and federal labor laws
- Ensure employee handbook is kept current and distributed accordingly
- Handle all onboarding and offboarding procedures
- Process and maintain E-Verify records and I-9 documentation
- Ensure proper documentation and filing of employee records
- Stay informed of all legal and HR best practices, policies, and labor requirements
Benefits & Insurance Administration
- Oversee employee benefit programs, including:
- Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance
- 401(k) retirement plan
- Aflac products (e.g., life insurance, supplemental coverage)
- Handle annual open enrollment and communication of benefit options
- Assist in evaluating and potentially transitioning to new providers or plan options H-2A Workforce Program Management (Seasonal Program: Jan–Nov)
This role will be the primary HR lead for managing the seasonal H-2A program, which makes up about 90 of our 150 total employees.- Prepare and file H-2A applications annually in collaboration with MAS Labor
- Coordinate and track all required documentation:
- Job orders
- Work contracts
- Housing inspections
- Transportation schedules
- Time and wage records
- Ensure full compliance with U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Wage & Hour Division (WHD), and USCIS regulations
- Lead onboarding for up to 90 seasonal employees arriving simultaneously each January — this is a critical and intensive part of the role
- Coordinate with managers to support training, job expectations, and worksite assignment
- Ensure field logs, hours, paystubs, and housing meet ongoing compliance standards
- Prepare for and participate in government audits or inspections
- Communicate clearly with Spanish-speaking employees — fluency not required, but must be comfortable using Google Translate or other tools to communicate respectfully and effectively
- Track rule changes and ensure proactive adjustments to maintain eligibility and compliance
- Ensure transportation and daily operations run smoothly for the duration of the H-2A season Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of professional HR experience (agriculture or labor-heavy industry preferred)
- Strong understanding of Alabama labor law and federal employment law
- Proven experience with payroll processing and time-tracking tools (SwipeClock or similar)
- Familiarity with E-Verify, I-9 verification, HRIS systems
- Experience with benefits administration (health, 401(k), supplemental insurance)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a leadership role
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills
- Willingness to be physically present during employee onboarding, DOL visits, and seasonal peak periods
- Comfortable working early mornings, overtime, or weekends during busy seasons
- Experience with H-2A Temporary Agricultural Worker program
- Familiarity with MAS Labor or similar H-2A filing agents
- Experience managing seasonal workforces and high-volume onboarding
- PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent certification
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) or willingness to use translation tools as needed
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for tracking and compliance
