Job Title: Sterilization Technician Department: Physician Office

Job Type: Part-time

General Statement of Duties: Responsible for proper preparation of surgical instruments and clinic laundry.

Supervision Received: Reports to Practice Manager

Supervision Exercised: None

Typical Physical Demands: Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Requires a full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Requires normal hearing. Requires normal vision range and the absence of color-blindness. Requires exposure to bodily fluids.

Typical Working Conditions: Possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to the clinic environment. Must use hazardous material precautions when such exposure exists.

Position Responsibilities: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)

1. Scrubs Instruments, and prepares surgical kits in accordance with physician expectations.

2. Ensures proper sterilization of instruments and kits through daily testing.

3. Maintains logs of sterility testing.

4. Maintains countertop autoclave through weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance schedule.

5. Launders and folds clinic laundry on a daily basis, and distributes to proper locations within the clinic.

6. Maintains knowledge of clinic schedule, to know when and where supplies will be needed.

7. Assists with unpacking and shelving medical supplies.

8. Weekly restocking of medical supplies in clinic rooms.

Independence of Operation: Performs duties independently, in accordance with established standards and policy. Work assignments are subject to review and general direction.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Skills and Abilities: Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with medical staff. Ability to react calmly and effectively to emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

3. Driver license and good driving record : Required to drive company vehicle between clinic locations within Birmingham.
