Diesel Mechanic- Sign on bonus potential!
Job Description
Job Description
As an A-Level Diesel Mechanic , you serve as the shop’s senior technical authority. You are responsible for complex diagnostics, major mechanical overhauls, advanced electrical troubleshooting, and final quality control sign-offs, while mentoring B and C-level technicians.
- Primary Focus: Minimal re-work, rapid diagnostic turnaround, DOT safety compliance, and maximum fleet uptime.
- Service Area: In-shop repairs for the greater Birmingham industrial and transit corridors (I-65, I-20, I-59).
2. Technical Responsibilities
Advanced Engine & Aftertreatment Diagnostics
- Diagnose complex fault codes using OEM computer software (Cummins Insite, Detroit DDDL, CAT ET, PACCAR DAVIE, Bendix ACom).
- Perform deep-dive troubleshooting on modern diesel emissions systems (DPF, DEF, SCR, EGR valves, and NOx sensors).
- Execute forced regenerations, injector cut-out tests, and hydrostatic leak checks.
Powertrain, Mechanical & Heavy Systems
- Perform complete engine teardowns, head gasket replacements, and in-frame overhauls.
- Diagnose and rebuild manual and automated manual transmissions (Eaton Fuller, Allison, Detroit DT12).
- Repair and rebuild differential assemblies, power take-offs (PTOs), drive axles, and wheel ends.
Electrical, Multiplexing & CAN-Bus
- Trace and repair CAN-Bus communication failures, short circuits, voltage drops, and sensor corruption.
- Install and program Electronic Control Modules (ECMs), Body Builders, and telematics systems.
Commercial Brake, Suspension & Alignment Systems
- Diagnose and overhaul air brake systems (ABS modules, air dryers, slack adjusters, brake chambers, and air lines) per FMCSA standards.
- Perform heavy-duty frame, steering linkage, air suspension (air bags, leveling valves), and 3-axle commercial wheel alignments.
3. Diagnostic & Repair Workflow
To ensure efficiency and prevent misdiagnosis, follow this standard execution process for every complex repair order:
1.Vehicle Intake & Fault Verification: 10-15 Minutes.
Review the driver's vehicle inspection report (DVIR) or work order. Connect diagnostic software, pull active/inactive fault codes, and duplicate the issue under realistic load or operating conditions.
2.Root Cause Pinpoint Testing: Variable Timing.
Follow OEM diagnostic trees. Perform physical voltage drop tests, pressure tests (fuel/air/coolant), or scope readings rather than firing the "parts cannon." Document exact failed components.
3.Parts & Repair Plan Authorization: 15 Minutes.
Log required OEM part numbers, estimate labor hours, and submit the ticket to the Service Manager or dispatcher. Verify parts availability before tearing down critical sub-assemblies.
4.Repair Execution & Torque Verification: Per Flat-Rate / Labor Guide.
Execute the repair to OEM factory specifications. Always use a calibrated torque wrench on critical fasteners (head bolts, u-bolts, lug nuts, flywheel bolts). Replace all required single-use gaskets and O-rings.
5.System Reset, Road Test & Quality Check: 20-30 Minutes.
Clear fault codes, perform required ECM recalibrations or resets, and conduct a road test under operating temperature. Perform a final visual check for leaks, loose fittings, or unaddressed safety items.
4. Operational Benchmarks & Quality Control
Service Category
A-Level Quality Standard
FMCSA / Regulatory Reference
DOT Annual Inspections
Complete 133-point mechanical inspection with zero missed out-of-service items.

Test hold-down pressure loss (under 3 psi/min single, 4 psi/min combination).
49 CFR § 393.52
Commercial Alignments
Set total toe, camber, and caster within +/- 0.05 degrees of spec to maximize tread life.
OEM / Tire Manufacturer Spec
Aftertreatment Repair
Verify zero active NOx conversion codes and complete full monitor readiness check post-repair.
EPA Heavy-Duty Diesel Standards
Wheel End Service
Measure and set end-play strictly between 0.001" and 0.005" using a dial indicator.
TMC RP 618
5. Safety, Environmental & Shop Leadership Rules
Critical Safety Rule: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures are mandatory during all frame, electrical, or under-hood service. Never rely solely on hydraulic jacks — always double-block axles with heavy-duty jack stands.
- Environmental Compliance: Ensure all drained fluids (antifreeze, oil, DEF, gear lube) are captured and transferred to proper bulk containment tanks immediately. Keep oil-water separators clear.
- Heat Safety (Birmingham Summer Protocol): Stay hydrated and ensure proper ventilation when operating high-temp forced regens inside shop bays.
- Mentorship: Actively guide B-Level and Apprentice Techs on diagnostic logic, wiring diagram literacy, and tool safety. Review and counter-sign technical work orders completed by junior team members when required.
