The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is actively recruiting experienced and dedicated professionals to serve as Correctional Facility Administrators, overseeing facility operations at various locations throughout Alabama.
SALARY INFORMATION
- Level I = $69,012.00 - $116,179.20
- Level II = $74,296.80 - $125,304.00
- Level III = $86,359.20 - $145,303.20
Note: Starting salary is based on position location, responsibilities, and candidate education/experience.

POSITION DUTIES
A Correctional Facility Administrator plans, administers, coordinates, and reviews the security, treatment, and administrative programs of a correctional facility in the State of Alabama. This leadership role is critical to the ADOC's ability to fulfill its overarching mission of providing public safety through the safe and secure confinement, rehabilitation, and successful re-entry of offenders into society. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Security & Inmate Management
- Ensure institutional security through strict adherence to facility protocols, emergency response plans, and disciplinary procedures.
- Oversee inmate classification, housing assignments, and facility movement to maintain order and safety.
- Manage specialized security programs, including Strategic Threat Group (STG) intelligence and contraband interdiction initiatives.
- Respond to emergencies, security threats, and critical incidents, coordinating with law enforcement as needed.
Facility Leadership & Administration
- Plan, implement, and oversee a coordinated correctional program for multi-custody inmate populations.
- Direct daily facility operations, ensuring compliance with ADOC policies, state and federal regulations.
- Develop and implement policies to maintain security, safety, and inmate rehabilitation programs.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Recruit, train, and oversee facility staff, including correctional officers, administrative personnel, and support teams.
- Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and leadership development among facility personnel.
- Address personnel matters, including performance evaluations, corrective actions, and policy compliance.
Budget, Resource & Facility Management
- Develop and manage the facility budget, ensuring effective resource allocation and fiscal responsibility.
- Oversee procurement of supplies, equipment, and operational needs.
Incident & Crisis Management
- Lead facility response to disturbances, escapes, natural disasters, and other emergencies.
- Develop and implement emergency preparedness plans and crisis management protocols.
- Coordinate investigations of incidents, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up.
Rehabilitation & Reintegration Programs
- Promote and oversee education, vocational training, and reentry programs to support inmate rehabilitation.
- Ensure access to healthcare, mental health services, and substance abuse programs.
- Collaborate with community partners to enhance reintegration efforts and reduce recidivism.
Stakeholder Engagement & Public Relations
- Serve as the primary representative of the facility, engaging with ADOC leadership, law enforcement agencies, legal entities, and community organizations.
- Ensure effective communication with staff, inmates, and external stakeholders regarding facility operations, policies, and programs.
- Represent the facility during audits, inspections, and external reviews to ensure compliance and operational transparency.
QUALIFICATIONS
Level I
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university; and
- A minimum of six (6) years of experience as a correctional officer; and
- At least four (4) years of supervisory experience, with at least two (2) years at the rank of Captain or Security Chief (or equivalent level).
Level II
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university; and
- A minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a correctional officer; and
- At least five (5) years of supervisory experience, with at least three (3) years at the rank of Captain or Security Chief (or equivalent level) or higher (Level 1 experience preferred).
Level III
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university; and
- A minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a correctional officer; and
- At least six (6) years of supervisory experience, with at least four (4) years at the rank of Captain or Security Chief (or equivalent level) or higher (Level 1 and/or II experience preferred).
Education/Experience Substitutions
- Additional education and/or experience above that which is minimally required, may be substituted on a year for year basis.
- Experience as a Director or Manager of a program within a correction institution can be substituted for the required experience as a on a year for year basis for the Security Chief experience.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead large teams in a high- stress environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, inmates, and external stakeholders.
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities, particularly in crisis
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to corrections and inmate
- Proficiency in the use of correctional management software and other relevant technologies.
