Job Title: Phlebotomist - 3rd shift

Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties such as troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position involves working in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
• Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods, such as urine or fecal, as required.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Ensure accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Package specimens for transport, store specimens according to required temperature, and place samples in appropriate collection containers.
• Label samples accurately and follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Phlebotomy experience of 2+ years in a hospital setting handling 30-50 blood draw volumes, including all age groups from pediatric to geriatric.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Ability to work off-shift hours.
• Knowledge in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, coagulation, urinalysis.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Hospital experience is a must.
• Heel sticks are preferred but not required.

Work Environment

This position is based in a hospital setting, requiring lots of walking and standing while going to patient rooms with a 20-pound push cart containing phlebotomy supplies. The work involves a team setting, working the 3rd shift from 11 PM to 7:30 AM, Monday to Friday. The phlebotomist is expected to handle an average of 30-50 patients per day, including inpatient phlebotomy during morning rounds, stocking, supply help, and front desk processing. Training will be conducted on-site for approximately two weeks.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Birmingham, AL.

The pay range for this position is $17.75 - $22.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Birmingham,AL.
